99 regal needs new maf

My check engine light came on then the car started stalling upon initial startup when it was cold, so I took it to my mechanic and he said it needs a new mass air flow sensor. I decided that I was just going to replace it myself. where do you guys suggest that I get the part from? Any tips or tricks on replacing it? just in case you were wondering it is a 99 regal gs w/ approximately 136k on it. ALso how do I reset the check engine light after I have replaced it?

Any auto parts store but most MAFs are remanufactured.

All you need is a Torx T20 tamper proof bit. There are two of these Torx screws that hold the MAF to the throttle body. Also, don't forget the electrical connector.

Best way to reset is with an odb-ii scanner/scan tool.

Do you mean that I need to replace the electrical connector also? If so how do I do that?

No, you just have to unplug the MAF electrical connection. It has a clip on the underside of it you have to gently manipulate to release it. After you unplug it, just undo the 2 screws and lift it straight out. New one goes in same way. Don't over tighten the screws, they just have to be snug. Then plug back in the connector, start car and go!

P.S. You can buy a MAF for your car off ebay brand new for less than half of what you will pay at an auto parts store. Or if you are feeling lucky, you can visit a scrap yard and pull one from another lower mile car. You can take one from a Grand Prix or probably Impala as well, they should be the same.

It depends on their policy and the parts tech operating the scanner. For example in my area Autozone will scan if the SES/CEL light is on and provide DTCs but will not reset to clear the stored DTCs or SES/CEL light. Best to check with them directly or purchase an inexpensive odb-ii scanner which will pay for itself in the long run.

The light actually turned off after about 15 miles of driving with the new mafs
