1997 chevy transmission problem Help

I recently put a crate motor in my truck and now that im driving it, when it goes to shift it sputters before it will shift. If i back out of the gas right when it is going to shift it will shift ok. I checked the fluid and its fine. any ideas on whats wrong?

Check for engine running problems.
