Ok, all the cars I had since now were given to me by uncles/brother etc. I never had to buy a car before.

I need to buy a new car and I need tips on how to negociate, what I can or cannot do etc.

I'm thinking about these models in particuliar:

Hyundai Accent
Mazda MP5
Ford Focus (hatch)
Honda Civic

I just want a basic model, nothing fancy with a manual Transmission.

So what's the best choice. I want something reliable and easy to maintain. But not to expensive.

Thanks!

Id go for the civic ... hondas routinely go to 200,000 miles with no problem.

Are you thinking of getting a used or new car?

A new one.

I've been driving old beaters for 12 years now.

I want a new one.

Another thing, what's the pros/cons of renting and buying?

Unless you plan on having a new car every three years or so, leasing is not the way to go. If you plan on keeping a car for several years, new is better then used. Of the cars you've mentioned, the Civic would be the one I'd point you to.

Do a search in this forum for car buying tips. I know there are several threads with good information in them.

YOU SHOULD DEFINATELY GET A CIVIC. I myself don't like them, but they get about 30mpg. Great investment and a Great reliable car.

as far as negotiating goes, never put yourself in a situation you're not willing to walk away from. and since you're going to be out there you might as well test drive the new lexus IS sport design, you get a free subscription to media week magazine for testdriving, it's woth the ride.
