check engine light

I am looking at purchasing a 2001 Chevy Cav. and it has the check engine light on. The owner claims it is related to him changing the oil himself and not being able to reset a oil change interval trip. Is this possible, every other vehicle I have, the oil change light is seperate from the check engine light?

I live in a remote area so nobody scans the codes for free, so I would have to make an appointment at a garage to have the codes read, which I would do before I buy it, but I was wondering if it was even possible, I would think the change oil feature would be a seperate light?

Thanks,

Randy

If you have a check engine light coming up, is there any way you can get that scanned so you can get a better look into the problem? Shit, it could be a huge situation and you could get screwed. Find out what that engine code says before you go any farther. Cuz, seriously, I never heard of that and I've been a cavi owner for 6 years. And believe me, I've had problems you'd have nightmares over. lol

I mean I know you said you have to pay for it. But shit, I'd make the owner pay up for it. Some scanners you can buy are relatively cheap nowadays, but I don't trust buying a new car with an engine light on.

If you have a walmart anywhere close you could pick up a scanner for about $80-$100, they are pretty handy to have anyways, and they work on anything 96 and up

RandyNever heard of the oil change interval light on the Cavies. Seen it on the more expensive vehicles and you are correct it is a different light /indicator on those vehicles. I could be wrong but I think someone is BS ing you about cause of light. Have him pull out the owners manual and show you where it tells you about "oil Change interval light"

The only light related to oil on a Cavy is the low oil pressure light. He's a liar. :P

I highly recommend picking up a scanner, they are an invaluable tool with newer cars.

I'm having nightmares from problems with my 1997 Z-24 which is mechanically identical to your '98. The engine stumbles and quits when stopped in heavy traffic on hot days. Restarts okay, but takes 2500 rpm to keep it running. On the freeway I get a massive stumble with the tach dropping and then power returns to normal. The stumble usually happens twice and the MIL lights for both crank and cam position sensors. Most engine sensors and ignition components have been replaced with no help. Was this one of your nightmare problems? If so, what fixed it?
