Speedo problem on 94 Civic

Hi all,
First post...got a problem with my speedometer. The needle has been working intermittently on the speedo for a couple of months. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. I was told it was the VSS so I purchased it and installed it (2 bolts, easy off, a little pin replaced as well.) No go. worked for 5 miles, then needle dropped. What could it be then?

94 Honda Civic EX coupe
155K miles
Auto trans.

try a new cluster?

Yeah, usually if the cel doesn't come on, the vss is okay.
I've had to change the speedo in a couple Hondas.
There's a drive motor and PC board on back of speedo you can change if you want to keep the same mileage speedo.
