Hey guys, I'm not new to automotive forums, but I am new to the S-10 section. I'm looking to buy a '00-'03 Chevy S-10 ZR2 but I keep hearing a lot about how common it is to have the transfer case go on people. Does anyone know what causes such a common failure? Is it strictly the transfer cases with the available auto 4x4 or is it all transfer cases prone to self destruction? I appreciate any advice or information. Thanks in advance!!

They need special fluid and regular service ever so often.

So basically if I keep it properly maintanted, it should last quite a while. What sort of service does a transfer case require?

Most tranfer cases only have to have the fluid drained then refilled with new fliud. On very rare cases I have seen the chain stretch or break. I my self have not seen that much go wrong with that model S-10.
