1995 Taurus wagon speedo problem

The speedo needle on the wagon jumps errativally. last month I pulled the cable, greased it & put it back, worked for 10 minutes. So I bought a new cable at NAPA and installed it. still no luck. Picked up a new instrument cluster & had it installed. Still no luck. Does the 95 have an electronic sensor by the tranyy, or is a mechanical issue down there? something else?? Thanks,

Welcome to the forum!

If you have a cable that runs the speedo, then it goes all the way to the tranny and has a mechanical connection there as well. The mechanical interface to the tranny will be through the vehicle speed sensor though, which is effectively a DC generator which is gear-driven off of the transmission to provide a varying DC voltage to the PCM and cruise control unit.

The problem with the bouncing speedo needle may be in the speedo head rather than in the cable. Lubing the cable may have allowed enough temporary lubrication to get into the speedo and temporarily reduce the bouncing. Or, maybe you didn't get enough lube on the cable and the new cable has absorbed all the grease already.

So do you think the replacement speedo head could also be bad? I've done the things I feel I can do, and will take it to my friendly nieghborhood mechanic next I suppose.

I don't have an answer for you but read my post about transmission problem and maybe you will get an answer along with me.
