1956 won't start

My '56 Chevy is not starting right now. I drove it Tuesday, and everything seemed fine. Thursday I tried to start it, it turned over, and fired, but didn't stay running. The next time I turned the key I got power to the dash and then nothing. No ticking no turning over, nothing, like when you try to start a manual without the clutch in.

Any ideas?

Basic diagnostics here, **** Check for loose corroded battery cables. Got power to the starter solenoid when cranking? Check the battery capacity,

go out to your car see if you can turn the motor over by hand ( battery disconected) turn it in the normal direction only if itmoves back but not forward then maybe your timeing chain has sliped because the gears shot ok
bewar if this is the situation your valves could become bent but most likeing the head studs would pullout off the head bosses making the valves loose by about 1/8 an inch if it has jumped time you must fix and line the timeing gears befor you attempt to crank the motor over so beware ,aside from that .. its some outher reason to get a haynes manual or visit your librarie read about diagnosing a no start or no crank it will guide you throughthe process
