Prelude questions. help new guy

Ok, so I think im pretty set on buying a honda prelude, i was thinking a 94 at first but i think i might get a 96 with a VTEC cus they come with one right? anyway i honestly dont know crap about cars but really wanna learn and my friend has an evo 9 and im always in the car with him when he races.
i love racing and want to have a pretty nice and fast car and preludes are pretty good, cheap, and i will have extra money for a body kit/ rims/ cold air intake etc.
i just need opinions on all this, what i should put in it, what i shouldnt put in it, what i CAN put in it.
and can they get a turbo in them or do u can only supercharge them, i dont really wanna play for a supercharge
please help if you know alot about this and try to teach me a little =]]

Haha, not only the 96 Preludes have VTEC. 94's do too. There's the Prelude S, Prelude 4WS, Prelude Si, and Prelude VTEC. The VTEC motor is the H22A1. Which is an H-Series 2.2 Litre motor while the Si is an H23A1. If you have the cash, do a swap for the JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) H22A, which IS faster. Get an intake, headers, cat-back exhaust. Basically your car depends on your wallet. If you have the money, get cams, cam gears, valves, and even rods and pistons. Crower has really good cams. And for your question on turbo or supercharger, you can turbo a Prelude. Don't get a cheap ass $700 EBay kit though. That will get messed up. Spend a couple grand on a good company, I.E Turbonetics or Greddy. But for sure you shoud do an intake/header/exhaust. Any more questions?

Haha. Keep the body stock for now, you won't get power out of a body kit. And DON'T get a huge ass wing. Get coilovers for sure. That's suspension. But if you go turbo, you'd have to build your motor. And the 92-96 H22A1 are all the same motor. Same power. Unless you go JDM. www.hmotorsonline.com (http://www.hmotorsonline.com) has the JDM H-Series for sale.

Alright, by building a motor, you re-do all your internals, aka the cams, valves, rods and pistons etc. Because the stock ones usually can't handle the high compression the turbo makes the motor. I couldn't find a VTEC for sale, but I like the Si. It pulls on the Prelude VTEC till third gear, then the VTEC has the redline advantage. But I've beaten 3 at the 1/4 mile. And no, I didn't get a JDM motor, mine is USDM. Here is what all I have done to my car:

Don't get a 96 if you're going to be modding it, OBDII sucks. 95 is the best year of all of the 4th gens.

I totally forgot about that. Thanks Man. I have a 94. But the only downfall with the H23A1 is that it's not as common has the H22A1 for modding, so they don't make as many parts. H22A1 is the better motor honestly. But I'm content with the the 2.3

All the stuff I have is probably like 3 or 4 grand. But cars take time and patience to do. A little at a time goes a long way. And na, I'm not turboing my car. It's gotta be reliable to last me for college and I don't have the money.
And I haven't ran the 1/4 in a long ass time because I've been on probation.:banghead: But when I run it I'll let you know.
And yeah, the H22A1 is in 92-96 Preludes. And the 5th gen, (97-01) have the H22A4.

THe 94 VTEC that my friend has has intake, header, and cat-back exhaust. That's it. But it's a really good car. OBDII is far more difficult to tune after market than OBDI.

That's not bad. But PERSONALLY, I'd get a Prelude that's is still stock, with nothing done to it like that one. You can't really learn anything if the car is already done, and half the time, when people own Honda's, they do everything the fast way, which means it's usually not done right. See if you can find a stock one on autotrader.com or cars.com

Lol. Prelude's come with AC. But cold air intakes aren't always good.

That's stupid. The JDM motor is EXACTLY the same as the USDM size and all that, so the AC should have fit. I'd go stock man

There a too many reasons I wouldn't buy that lude on Craigslist.
But the fact that there is no AC and you live in AZ would be enough for me. Also the fact that they are calling it a "Race car"...I doubt that thing has ever seen a track but it was probably misused and abused a lot on the street. And I seriously doubt that "v-tech" (lol) engine gets 30mpg.
I'd be patient and look for a lude that has a working AC and isn't hideously mutilated by a goofy body kit. They aren't that hard to find.

That's what I was thinking. I completely forgot to point out the "VTECH" on it. Because if they said it was a race car, all you do is look at the valve cover and it says it nice and big 'DOHC VTEC' which means something isn't right. Would you agree, Gohan, to go for a stock or close-to stock Lude?

if u want a fast car and don't want to spend loads of money a prelude might not be the best way to go... because i have a 95 prelude vtec h22a1... and i'll tell u what i've already dumped over 5gs into motor part..to go all motor and i'm still spending money.. because fully built all motor, not even 300whp.. and you won't even run 13's.. i'm going to change out piston to add a turbo to get to my goal of at least 400hp... soo get a h22 prelude with minor add ons and turbo it and you'll easily get 300+ hp, but like i said it will take shit loads of money,time, and pashence.. ive been building on my lude for a little over a year and a half and will still take a nother year a about 7+ grand ... all together i'll end up 20 grand into it... my opinion go with a intera GSR...
a stock gsr vs. stock vtec lude a gsr will win every time plus theres a lot more for it and is much easier to work on.......

Well if he gets a JDM H22A, he'll have more power. Gut the car, make it lighter, do simple bolt-ons and some cams and gears and it'll be fast. My friend has an accord with the JDM H22A and it walked on a GSR on the way to the track, and then ON the track. Best time was a 13.9 on street tires. So yeaaahh..and that's not $7,000.

Backfiring is just unburned fuel. Change the spark plugs/wires and that should be it. GSR's are good cars. They have a B-series 1.7 liter. It's up to you. I wouldn't trade my Lude for anything.

I'd just ditch the SOHC alltogether. Get an H22A. It's worth the money.

i have a question i have a h23 supposedly rebuilt but has no compression on three cylinders and 150 on the other i double checked the timing according to helms manual its all properly timed can anyone help?

You've have to block some oil passages. You'd be better off getting the full motor, though. "Frankenstein" motors often aren't all that reliable. I've seen people who really knew what they were doing end up blowing stuff up.
Pull your motor, sell it to some dumbass that thinks it's a good motor. Then just shell out the $1000 or so for a decent H22A. Me and my friend did an H22 swap in 2003, and it's been running strong ever since.
