Ok so I am looking into getting a cherokee 99-2000 4wd. Since I have been looking around I have noticed there are a few different models. So far I have seen the Classic, Sport, and few that didnt say anything just Cherokee. So what is the difference between these???
I have also considered getting a Grand Cherokee 99-2000. Which one do you think is better the Grand Cherokee or Cherokee? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks! :flash:

The differences that I know of in the cherokees are as follows: the one that just says cherokee, is the cherokee se, this is the base model, I have not seen the interior on one of these but I imagine it is somewhat lacking, It also comes with steel wheels. the major differences between the sport and the classic are , the classic has all trim painted to match the body color, the sport has the dura-trac four wheel drive (only part time) while the classic has the selec-trac with a full-time option. the rest of the differences are in the interior. Also the classic has alloy wheels. there is also a cherokee limited, The only thing I know about this is that it has leather seats, and I am assuming it has all the options possible. good luck in finding one that you love.

Everyone has their opinion...unless your Husband, boyfriend, dad,or significant other has money or you work at a dealer, buy the Cherokee.
I work at a single line Jeep dealer ( 20 years ) and the Cherokee is BY FAR the most reliable vehicle Jeep made.If this helps ,my father has a heart condition and he just bought a 97 XJ sport with 99515 miles on it !
I told him I would buy it if he did not !( hard to find around $5000 ).
The Grands seem to be a little on the high on the repair scale, but still a nice vehicle. If you can score a WJ under some sort of warranty, nut it.

I went from a Cherokee LTD to a Grand Cherokee LTD and the diffrence I noticed is the way they ride and drive. The Grand is much nicer and more car like than the cherokee, but the cherokee is better off road than the grand, and mine came with limited slip front and rear so I never found a place it wouldnt go. The Grand is a larger SUV and wouldn't fit in some of the places I have taken the little one. Both are very good but one cost alot more. :-)

i drive an XJ cherokee. it runs like a tank, i cant stop it. i smoked a dear, lost a radiator, and drove with it overheating on the expressway for 25 min because i was pissed. that was 2 years and 20,000 miles ago and all ive done since is a water pump (and the radiator). it still doesnt leak/burn oil, and the only problem is the AC which i could care less about.

Asking which is best is pretty open ended. Best for what?

Are you going to be doing much off road driving? You said you wanted 4x4 so I assume you will be doing some, but are we just talking about dirt roads or do you want to cross rocky creek beds.

I have a 97 XJ Country. It has the premium sound (CD/TAPE) leather and power everything.

It does not handle very well on the pavement. But works great on really rough roads with bowling ball sized rocks. I am very happy with it as my daily driver, but I recognize that I am giving up some on road performance. I have driven a '96 Grand 2x4 on the pavment a lot also and can atest to it being a little better on the pavment.

I allways say less is sometimes more (the less crap to go wrong the more time you have to do other things.)
I have a 86 xj 2.5L and it is by far the best rig Ive ever had. one example is total cost I paid $2000 for it five years ago in those five years I have spent less than $1000 to keep it going and the last $400 was on tires. It has never left me sitting on the side of the road. I must also say that it is approaching 300,000 miles without ever having any engine work( I know this because i know the person that bought it new.) The only bad thing is it is about the fact that it is not the most powerfull rig on the road.

YOU'RE RIGHT ABOUT LESS THINGS TO GO WRONG, I ANSWER MORE QUESTIONS ABOUT GRAND CHEROKEES THAN ON THE CHEROKEE. OWNED CHEROKEES SINCE 86 BEST MODEL MADE A DEPENDIABLE .

the only thing i have to say is that you can get v8 with grand. lots of people bitch about cherokee and lack of power really its all in what you want to do with it and how much you want to spend on you rig. me i went with reg cherokee cause i think i would cry over a dent in a grand (to nice) then again i've got some money in mine!

I have both a 93 Cherokee 4.0 and a 96 5.2 GRAND. The Cherokee is the most simplest to work on and goes through snow like nothing. The grand is more High Maintenance but has a much smother ride and handles bad weather just as good or better than the Cherokee.

Cherokee all the way! I have an 00' Xj with 91K on the 4.0 ltr, it has been all over the US, and has seen its share of mud and sand. Only problem I ever had was at 36K it over heated badly, dealer fixed it with an entire new coolant system, and have had nothing but fun since. as far as power goes, mine has plenty( I have owned a 71 f-100 w. 400M .060 bore). With a K&N FIPK and a Magne Flow muffler, she really moves. Mine is the SE model, it came with A/C, AM/FM CASSETTE, AUTO 4X4, HIGH BACK CLOTH INTERIOR. What else do you need.

Love my '88 Laredo 4.0L. A little TLC and it runs strong.

Likewise, I've had dealer service people tell me they make a killing off Grand Cherokee repairs and that the reg cherokees are much more reliable.

IMO if you want longevity and fewest repairs then do without as many electronic extras as possible. For example cherokee electric seats have a nylon/plastic type worm gear and if it goes, it's big bucks at the dealer.....$400 just for the part and $450ish to repair from the prices I was quoted when I was contemplating buying a gold package 89 cherokee. Power window regulator malfunctions are also a frequent complaint.

If I could find another Gold package (Cherokee Ltd) 90 cherokee with low mileage and good original paint however, I'd take it in a heartbeat.

****If more people had old cherokees less people would talk on cell phones while driving! ....because you can't hear a darn thing with all that road noise.***

I've got a 95 xj se with the 2.5L & this thing makes my 4runner sound like a Lexus!!! The XJ is a tank, though!
