i know that there are better heads than others for sbc's but are certain stock intake manifolds better than others?

Absolutely. There are far too many to make a complete "list" here.
General rules "of thumb": A non-EGR intake is better than most that ARE "EGR" (Exhaust Gas Recirculatioin, identified by a vacuum can and valve that "plumbs" exhaust gasses into the intake runners).
If you run a Q-Jet or other "spread bore" carb, always use a spread-bore intake, no adapters please. If using a Q-Jet, '68-'72 are the intakes of choice ('73 was the first year of EGR). The mid-'80s aluminum "spread bore" intakes aren't bad, but still have the EGR provision. Anything that "fits" fuel injection (TPI) will not accept a carb. TB (throttle body) intakes aren't much, either. "CrossFire" has been modified to make a ton of power, but be prepared for a LOT of work. Those are based on the late '60s "Smokey Ram".
The factory intakes from the mid '60s that are aluminum and mount a Holley or Carter AFB are superior in performance than any other single 4-bbl. intake factory-offered, provided the correct type carb is used.
If you have a specific casting in mind, let us know what it is and maybe we can dig up some info on it.

Look at them. If one has EGR and the other doesn't, use the one that doesn't. If they're both with or without, choose the one in better condition. There won't be a significant performance difference, regardless.
