vw beetle radio code

need help figuiring out radio code, i am replacing my radio in my 99 beetle. Does the code come from the serial number on the radio? Please help, I have the serial number.

As far as I'm aware the serial number has no code included in it and you will need to go to VW to get them to give you the code - they will need the VIN from the car the replacement radio came from I think but check first. I've read that you can run into a lot of trouble using aftermarket radios in New Beetles if you don't know what you are doing so I'd do as much research as possible before pulling wires etc.

Thanks for the input, I don't have to worry about rewiring because I am putting in another vw beetle radio. But I don't know the vin # of the car it came out of.
