Restoring '79 TRANS AM

I built this '79 T/A about 10 years ago. this is a Monogram's 1:24 snap kit.
painted wine red, but I'm not satisfied with this finish. the bird decal is cracking now...
http://www.works-y3f.com/m_cars/2_usa/am/79/A_AM79a.jpg
last week, I suddenley decided to restore this model.
sanded the body by #400-#1000 sandpapers, peeled off the paint perfectly. it was very hard work.
then I applied primer today.

http://www.works-y3f.com/af/79ta/02.jpg
this time, I'll paint this model black.
about the bird decal, I have MPC's 1:25 '79 T/A. but the bird decal color is blue and different scale.
I found Monogram's 1:24 '78 T/A kit included two type of the bird decal. it's useful(upper one).

Why did you decide to sand it and not use a stripper of some sort?

Chris, I'm using acrylic paint. are there any stripper for it? I've never seen before. please tell me even if it's too late. :p

Osamu! Shame on you for not reading the FAQ on stripping paint! idding. (yes, I know you don't need it :o)
Basically brake fluid in a container with the body immersed into it will sort you out. Even for acrylic paints (and actually those are easier to strip, imo)

In this (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?threadid=67093&highlight=modelstrip) thread, from a while back, i posted details of a UK product called Modelstrip. Its ideal for enamel and acrylic paints, try doing a search on Google for stockists, but i don't see it around too often.

I have been trying desperately to find a decal like the top one!!! Are you sure it was in the `78 firebird kit? Mine just came with a black and gold one like the bottom one you posted, and a black and blue one.

Hawk, below kit including that decal.
I wish you find and get this kit.
and thanks again Chris. I'll try to find stripper like that in Japan.

Castrol Super Clean will strip acrylics and enamels. Plus, you can use it time and time again. I still haven't changed mine out. Brake fluid is only good for 2-3 models in my experience.

I Really liked the way you did this model before, I like to see a second gen in a colour that is anything but black. Siler, Silver interior and black wheels looks awesome! It's looking good so far, keep us posted. Why not try metallic black on it? :D

After painted black, applied clear coat once then put on decals.
applied clear coat yesterday. 2 more clear coat to go.
now, I'm thinking about interior color and rims.
here is repainted body pic.

The black does seem a little, well, predictable. Seems as if every late 2nd gen Trans Am gets the "Smokey and the Bandit" treatment.
But I like the wheels and tires from before. Are they going to find their way back underneath this piece?

Looks Awesome again, Your a great modeller.
How do you paint your models. Do you do your paint job in 1 day. Is your paint job shiny before you ise clear coat.
What kind of paint do you use?

yes, I know black is boresome color for Trans Am. but I really like black Trans Am. that's all.
bah humbug, I paint once in 1 day.
I'm using Finisher's paints. these are Hobby Shop GT's products.
for hood, I used Finisher's urethane clear coat (pic #2).
urethane is clotting paint so it doesn't cause damage to decals.

If it looked that good before, and you feel the need to rebuild it, I can't imagine what level of perfection it's gonna be in. I'm not much of a domestic car guy but I have to give you props on the build,it's VERY nice.
BTW, who makes that "wine red"? I love that color. please don't tell me testors makes it.. tell me what I wanna hear.. TAMIYA!!!!
