I took the head off yesterday and the exhaust valve on # 1 has a little pc. missing. The catalitic converter was pluged up.

Their is 180,000 miles on the car I picked up in Iowa for $300 3 weeks ago. I was able to drive it up onto a trailer.

How hard is it to do the rest of the rebuild, pistons, rings, bearings, etc.?
I am going to send the head to a shop to have it done.

Has Johnny Mullet have a step by step on this?

OK after reading more threads I should pull motor and do main crank seals
etc. also. I haven't seen a play by play on this procedure.

I guess I better get a manual before I go much further.

Do I pull it from the top or bottom?

After you get the head off, you simply drop the pan and remove the connecting rod caps and push the pistons out to clean the grooves, hone the cylinders, stager the new rings, and install.

I pulled the engine out the top yesterday, to clear the trans. I had to pry it off the clutch plate but came out prety easy.
This thing is an oily mess even insite the bell housing.

The fingers on the plate are well worn should replace ,clutch probably also.

The parts look like they will cost at least $400.for the block, not including clutch parts.
And not including the head being sent to the shop. (they quoted $125.00 with 3 new exhaust valves.

Wonder what they would charge for the whole moter work?

Haven't done any thing like this since I replaced an engine (283) in a 57chevy I had in the early 80's.
I sent that motor to the rebuild shop.

Any one tried partsdinosaur ?

The parts around here are redicilous,$70 for piston rings ,$125 for a gasket set.

Advance auto pts. didn't list gasket sets, or pistons or rings I didn't bother asking them for any other parts.

Parts Dinosaur: Like the man says, "Stand away from the door".
Also look at rockauto.com.

I have had really good luck with "partsdino". I have placed about 5 or 6 orders in the past 4 years from him. I think someone else on this forum did complain about his pistons.

I also have used rockauto numerous times. No problems with them either

There is a member at TeamSwift.net who got head bolts from parts dinosaur and 5 of them broke off when trying to remove the head.

Try your nearest Carquest,Napa, parts plus or Auto Value ( if you have one) parts store for the headbolts. The catalytic converter is worth $300.00 and up for a junker off a GEO.Have one off a Tracker that is still good,$900.00 for a junk one.
