Rebuilt trans problem

I have a 99 Chevy Express Van (full size). 5.7 engine with 4L60E trans. I replaced the trans with a remanufactured trans and took for a test drive. The trans shifts way too quick and actually bogs down the engine when it tries to go into OD. I noticed that the Speedometer is reading way too high, something like 60 when I am actually doing 30. Any ideas what might be wrong? The rebuilt came from Autozone, has been dyno tested and the reason I replaced it was the old one quit completely and had metal in the pan. I have cleared the DTC codes and recently got a new code P1810. I am not sure the code is all that helpful as it tells me what I already know. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Update: not getting any codes now, but still shifts way too soon. Sounds like shifting a manual trans into high gear long before you should. Engine lugs.

Sounds like something is goofy with the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)?? I mean if you're only doing 30 and the speedo says 60, that 60 info is also sent to the tranny from the VCM for shift points.

1st, I want to thank you for the input. As I have racked my brain over this I would have to say that I have come to the same conclusion. Many years ago I use to rebuild the 350 and 400 THM, but never an electronic transmission. Of coarse with those, the speedo was gear driven and it was important which gear you had on the tail shaft. I assumed on this one, all I had to do was take my old sensor and put it in the newly rebuilt trans. Do you have any knowledge of what the sensor comes in contact with and if I need to run back to Autozone and grab the tail shaft part out of the core?

Thanks

The VSS is a permanent magnet (PM) generator. It senses the speed of the rotor wheel teeth on the output shaft and converts it to a "pulsing" AC voltage. There is no contact between the rotor and the VSS just the magnetic pulse.

So, does the new tranny have a rotor in it with twice as many teeth??.

Also the DTC P1810 (Tranny Fluid Press Valve Position Sw Circuit) may be a factor as well. One of the many things that can set this code is No VSS Assy DTC's P0502 and/or P0503.

I'm not a tranny guy, just researching for you out of my '98 C/K manual.

A couple of things I would look at are the connector and pins on the VSS and the 20 pin tranny connector. In fact I would look real close at all the connectors and recepticals that came off and went back on.

There's a lot of great tranny guys on here, hopefully one of them will step in with better input.

Hope it helps you some.

You are right on target here. 1810 will cause shift/slip issues the speedo is not related to this. If the trans was in default you would have a 3rd gear start.

You guys are great. Going to check all the connections tonight. The Tech Support line wants me to take it to a local garage to have a live test done on it. They said all the tail housings on this model 4L60E have the same internals (ie same number of teeth). If I find nothing wrong with connections tonight, a local garage will run a detail diagnostics on it tomorrow and we'll see what that shows.

Thank you

UPDATE: Turns out the VSS was bad and for $20 I installed a new one and the trans shifts great. After all this, I would bet that the $20 part was bad for some time and lead to the premature failure. I always attributed slightly unusual shifting to the fact it is a big vehicle (full size van), won't make that mistake again. You guys are great and I greatly appreciate the words of advice.
