I have a 2000 GM and recently it will not respond when in start position, this will happen two or three times and then start normal with no problems,it acts as if the car was in drive. Is there a starter soleniod separate from the starter like the old days? the battery is 6 months old and has been checked, all the connections have been checked including all grounds.any help would be appreciated.

They used to call them a neutral safety switch but I think it is now called a transmission range sensor. Try starting in neutral instead of park. They bolt on the side of the transmission. Try disconnecting it when it won't start and check for continuity. It may also be out of adjustment. Be very careful if you change it and set it exactly where the other one set. They make a special tool for this which I doubt if you have.
