I'm looking to replace my windshield in my 97 GPGT w/heads-up display. I'd really appreciate any advise on where to purchase one. Should I buy one used? I found one locally for 125.00. That being said, should I contact a body shop to install it? I have never dealt with replacing a windshield so any info would be great! TIA..

Hi Paul,

You actually found a used HUD windshield intact?

I would not attempt DIY install. Let a shop do it. Important to use the right sealant to make sure it seals and bonds properly to the frame.

Call an auto glass shop that does this. They know what they are doing and are certified to do this. One more thing, never use a screwdriver to get one out and you can break it this way.I know of one case of this done.

Thanks for the info. No I definately would not even think of doing this myself. Yea Bob, actually there are two used Hud windshields available here in town , both with class A rating and 125.00. I better jump on them ASAP.

You guys already answered a question that I was going to ask. I had some thoughts of replacing my windshield myself.

Sounds good Paul. All the ones here in my area are garbage. Too much wind and sand damage (pitted) so a new is the only option but expensive because of the special coating used for the HUD display. $400.00. But you can use the regular windshield too and believe it or not the HUD still shows. The regular only costs around $150 to replace new and that includes removal/installation at an auto glass shop.

Thanks for that info. I did not realize that a regular windshield could be used. Is there a big difference between the two on how brightly the HUD shows up?

Not to my knowledge. Maybe minor intensity differences. Basically all the special windshield does is allow for distortion free forward vision/viewing of what the HUD projects. Laminated windshield with a specially placed layer of Dupont Butacite. However, the rule of thumb is better to use the HUD windshield.
