We have a 1966 Chevy C10 we plan on restoring and would like to find out what size the engine is. The current engine is not the original one and is actually from a '75 Nova. All I can remember about the original engine is that is was a straight 6. I have the original engine number. Can I tell by that?
My dad bought the truck brand new in 1966 so I have a ton of history with the little truck.

Engine's for that years were 230 cubic inch , for 6, 283-327 V-8 cubic inch or if gmc a V-6 215

Are you looking to find a '66 block to install?
IMO it's probably not worth it, unless you are doing a concours perfect resto, which would be a bit unusual for a pick up.
The Nova engine will be visually identical to the original (if it's a six cyl.), but probably is a bit larger, at 250 cid. Also, the Nova engine has hardened valve seats for using unleaded gas; something the original engine probably did not have.

I think the 292 ( 6 cylinder ) was also available in 1966 . You can tell it from the 230 by the motor mount locations. The 230 mounts were straight across from each other where the 292 mounts were offset from each other . Hope this helps ?

 Hi, forgot too add if you are the orginal owner or buy it second hand, look in the glove box or stapled under the seat will be a build sheet for that truck, it will ether list as code or actual engine, also the owner manual, might be stuffed in there with bill of sale, all depends on what you order from the factory and want your pickup to do, but i'm pretty safe too bet it was the 230, with three on tree as a common setup, and the 292 was for more heavy duty apps, Everett.
