83 S-10 2.8L V6 Rough Idle/Dies after Harmonic Balancer Install

Hello,

1983 S-10 2.8L V6 2 wd pickup, A/T, California emissions, VIN 8th Letter B, 130,000 miles on original engine.

Background:
Took truck in for smog check. Overall the emissions were good but the harmonic balancer was no longer steady because of the rubber disintegrating, therefore a failed smog test. A harmonic balancer was installed over the past weekend. Old one was taken off and new one slid back on the keyway exactly the same. At the same time, replaced radiator and hoses, thermostat, engine coolant sensor and pigtail, four belts, some vacuum lines, new spark plugs. Wires were done about 1 year ago. The truck starts and runs at high idle but very rough and almost a knock? If you kick it down, it will die without constant reving the gas pedal. Truck is definitely not driveable at this point.

I have checked and don’t see any vacuum lines that are loose. The timing was presumed to be in correct order before the repair and has not been adjusted. At this point, I am hoping that the problem is the timing. Could someone please assist me with the correct timing method for this truck and engine. It has a carburetor, distributor and I don’t know what is considered an “early” model vehicle? Does the VIN indicate if it has an advanced vacuum or ? Would there be a better area to start with?

I tried to read for any codes or settings using an OBD1 reader on the ALDL. Scanner indicates it is not connecting and to make sure the ignition is turned on. I then tried to jumper wire A+B for any codes and helpful information, but the check engine light didn’t even flash a 12. Can I try any other combination of the letter codes? The ashtray has a plug/cap where a cigarette lighter would go. Would the ALDL connector not be hooked up to the computer?

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks.
