I'm currently replacing lower intake gaskets on a 99 Olds. Alero 3.4.
I hear there is a revised gasket set that deals with this problem many people are having on this engine. Are these gaskets purchased from the dealer?
What is the best intake gaskets if any for this engine?
Thanks.
Jack

You're better off with the FelPro intake gasket kit, MS98003T. It has the PermaDry Premium plus gaskets. This kit has all the gaskets and seals including the UIM and valve cover.
People are having reoccuring problems with the revised GM plastic LIM gaskets. The revised GM gaskets have been out since late 2003.

The gasket I took off the engine appears to be plastic with orange or pink around each port. Is this type of gasket sold as dealer item, and is this the one I need to stay away from?

The GM gaskets have the orange colored silicone rubber port seals. Does it look old or recently replaced? There is a possibility that the previous owner(s) had them replaced.

Yes, they do look like they have been replaced recently. I didnt know if those were the GM or Felpro. I know you said earlier you prefered the Felpro.
What about rings, rod and main bearings? What brand is best for the 3.4?

why are u worrying about replacing the rings rod and main bearings???
was the initial reason for taking it apart coolant leaking out from under the lower intake or did something else happen?

This engine has 160,000 miles on it. While I have it tore down I decided to go ahead and rebuild. Im sure I'll be glad I did later on.
