A/C 98 s10 pickup

I refilled the refrigerant with the R-134a. It cools a little better now. I would like to completely empty the refrigerant and refill it. How do I emty all the refrigerant? And when I refill it do I just put the R-134a in or do I need to put other additives in along with it? Thanks in advance for any help on this amateurish question.

Hello, first you need to evacuate the system to empty the system(need machine)your best bet is to just add but you need a set of guages to do that right so you know when its full

If evacuating the system you will need to add oil and r134 it is also best to replace the Orifice Tube.
You can buy a kit from Autozone,etc.
As far as the guages,I really don't use them for r134. They usually have a pressure guage on the can or a small hose you can buy.
You need to ask about what type oil to use.There are different ones like
PAG 100,PAG 150 and so on.

Your owners manual will give you the correct amount needed.

You cannot properly and safely recharge an air condition system with them.

The one side stop and go gauge does not tell you what your system is doing or is over charged or undercharged.
A overcharged or malfunction air condition system can reach over 500 lbs of pressure.
Enough to blow up that can or system and freeze you at first and the burn you or blind you and if any propane /butane in there blow and light you up.

The stop leak crap and who knows what kind of oil in the kits there will stop your system for sure.
Just like pouring super glue in it.
And some kits even contain freon with a butane mixer.
Good for a big blast.

If you are going to do it do it right and safe.

In the older days you could just throw in a can and go.
But over the years just adding freon is getting harder to do.
Newer systems have to have the correct amount of freon down to the ounces.
Most will need pumped down and vacuumed down and the right and amount of oil and a set amount freon charge installed to get the air to cool right and the system to last.
If an air condition is low there is usually a leak that needs fixed and also a lose of lubricating oil from system.
Also air and moisture enters a low system
If you are going to try to do it get the proper type air condition gauge set with the low and high side gauges.
Hook up the gauges and get a reading with compressor running at idle and at 2000 rpm on the high and low side.

Or you might convert the one hose one gauge death kit hose tap to gauges.
Top can tap has been around for 45 years.
But ac has changed fronm r-12 to r 134a.
So the need for new can taps on R-134-a

I didn't know they made those, I use 30lb tanks, cheaper. I would hate to see what could happen if someone connected the high side and left the valve open with a can on there. But i'm sure people have done it, the idea scares me.

On top can taps there should be a saftey valve in the hose.
But a carless pesson could tap the high side of a stopped up system with 450-500 lbs and have a can tap or hose with no saftey valve.

That is one good reason for using double ac gauge set to see how much pressure you have.

The little cans are not very thick.
Some have reported them blowing up in a hot car with all windows up in 120 sun.

I just looked at a couple of 30lbs disposable tanks that I have here and they are only tested at 325psi. However even they have a safety plug so the tank does not blow up.
