Mud or A/T

Ok, Time for new tires. I have an 89 s10 4.3 4x4 w/ 2" BL shackles and TB crank. I am currently running 31's with lots of room to spare. I have slight rub on the UCA bracket at full turn. Even though I could easily fit larger tires I have decided based on gas and front end parts and the fact that I really don't need the 33's to stick with the 31's. My truck is my daily driver but really only to and from work about 20 miles each way.
I currently have BFG longtrails? what ever the other BFG non AT TKO option is. I dont do serious trail riding or mudding. But I do use my truck at work to tow or hauls stuff out of some pretty nasty situations once a month or so. and it sees a fair amount of snow and mountains in the winter. I was really looking to get some decent mud tires. Not anything super nasty like a bogger or anything just something that will keep me from getting stuck that 1 or 2 times a year. I stopped off at several local tire and auto shops in the area. Some brand named chains, and some local shops. After talking to the guys and describing my situation None of them recommended the mud tire, and some made it seem as if it was really frowned upon. For the most part everyone recommended the BFG AT TKO which is what I would get if I got an A/T.
Are mud tires that bad on the road? I don't care about noise or a rough ride, I drive a big ugly lifted truck and dont expect tight cornering. Are they just trying to get rid of what is in thier stock? I tried making it clear that I was just shopping for prices and they would have plenty of time to get in some tires.
Should I just go in and as for mudders and not even talk about A/Ts?
