Shift indicator cable Replacement in 90 Cheyenne

Just got a nice beater 3/4 ton Chevy dirt cheap. Not much wrong with it either. One annoying thing is the shift indicator cable has either slipped off or broken. I wouldn't mind but my last silverado got that way and the wife drove it home in 2nd on the highway and blew out a freeze plug so I don't want to go there again. On the 88 Silverado it was buried deep in the dash and a beast to get to. How is it on the Cheyenne, do you have to take out the whole dash and cluster and work your way down? Any pointers on this critter?:sly:

The Cheyenne And Silverado should be the same set up.
You need to pull it out and have a look and see what the problem is.
First thing to check is the string on it. and make sure it is atttched to shift tube.
If string is broke sometimes it can be spliced in or replaced.

Yea I imagine its probably the string alright. My big question is what is the best way to get at it to see the thing. Probably via the cluster if I don't miss my guess. I just want to hear it from someone who knows so I don't have to go digging around unnecessarily or miss some easy method that I will kick myself for later. Sort of like when I personally busted the string on my old one when the cluster got knocked down from its perch which wasn't my finest moment. :crying: Any online schematics floating around out there to help ease the pain:banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I always pull lower splash panel first and see if it is hooked up on the bottom.

Definite bit of logic there. I know my way around these critters pretty well but am not quite sure what you mean by splash panel? Can you describe it ?
