Is there anyone that can tell me the tightening sequence for the cylinder head bolts for both heads? It is for a 400 engine. Thanks
Dan

400 sbc engines are the same sequence as all other sbc engines 265 to 400ci
start from center and work your way out the cylinder head ends in a large circle direction
good luck

The $64 queston... 400 Chevy or 400 Pontiac? One answer assumes Chevy. As this IS the "Firebird" section, is it the 400 Pontiac?
Chevy: 72 lb. ft. Begin by tightening the center bolt. "Spiral" your way to the ends, effectively "spreading" the head out over the gasket. There are 17 7/16" diameter head bolts on the small block. Be sure to use a brush-on gasket sealer on the threads.
Pontiac: 95 lb. ft. Tighten the center pair, and alternate side-side/top-bottom, outward. There are 10 1/2" diameter head bolts on the Pontiac. Use a drop of oil on the threads (no sealer).
