The new clutch thread. ACT

ok, so i'm in the market for a new clutch, i want something that is street able, but still have plenty where it counts. my goals are for around 400 WHP so i need the clutch to be able to hold that kind of power. originally i was thinking to go with a ACT 2600 6-puck sprung disk. but after reading around on tuners... i'm sorta shying away from act. so my question is this, what clutches have you guys had good luck with? act? center force? Clutch Masters? Exedy? Fidanza? particularly you guys who have had pretty much kicked the crap out of their clutches... the car will be getting tracked on a road coarse, and also driven on the street, and i want something that isnt going to slip like my OEM clutch when i really put the hammer down. also i wouldnt mind a heavier peddle feel... i'm going to be replacing the clutch and flywheel, and probABLY the clutch lines with a Steel braided line from the master to the slave cylinder... and get rid of that little "less driver feedback crap" thats in the OEM setup. let me know your thoughts guys... this place has been pretty dead lately, but hopefully this thread will get some action...

I just got the Fidanza 3.2 stage 2 clutch. kevlar 4 puck sprung disc and heavy pressure plate. And also got the Fidanza aluminum flywheel. lol and also got braided line from where the flex spot starts all the way to the slave. And got new master and slave. Should be a nice setup. Wont have it all the way back together until this weekend. Wish I could let you know how I liked it but its untested so I dunno yet.

I also strayed away from ACT after hearing about the exploding disc.

The only problem I have with ACT is that they use heavier pressure plates to hold more power. They use the same disc for almost every kit. Where as VGs clutch uses kevlar to hold more power plus a slightly heavier pressure plate, ACT uses a shitty organic disc and a heavy ass pressure plate to make it hold the power. This makes the car more annoying to drive.

With a worn 1G pedal assembly my centerforce DF has been great. Light pedal pressure, with very good holding power. They say to let this clutch cool in between runs at the track and it will last.

Just don't get one too hardcore or you will look like a noob when you kill the car coming away from a stoplight :loser:

Do you drive in traffic with the car alot. If you do, you will regret the heavy clutch until your left leg looks like something from a Mr universe contest.

so what you are saying, is since act makes their "better" clutches by making the pressure plate heavier, but essentially using the same clutch disk, this becomes almost pointless, since the disk will still slip eventually? correct? so i would be better off with something more along the lines of a Fidanza 3.2

VG; where did you order your clutch from? do they make a spring 6 puck disk? it looks like on Extremepsi, all they have is the sprung 4 puck ... do you think that is a bit to aggressive for the street? i guess i dont know much about clutches, other then mine slips, and i dont want the new one to, but i want to be able to beat on it, and not have issues, but i still need to drive to and from work everyday in traffic... and hold 400whp... lol

This is a good argument for an automatic transmission. I myself would rather drive a 4 speed tercel than an automatic ferrari. Will a new OEM clutch hold 400hp? I doubt it, I was just wondering if your stocker is slipping because it has some age on it. Just remember that a better clutch increases the chances of breaking something else in the driveline.

Man I don't know what to tell you about the ACT clutch. I have had 4 different clutches now and the act has been by far the best. You can scrap the exexdy stage 2 cerametallic bullshit. I blew that up on not even a hard launch. The one before that I can't even remember what it was but it only lasted a couple months before it slipped. The act I have been driving for a couple of years now and it has been awesome and since I just got the ss line that bypasses the accumulator or whatever that thing is called the pedal feel has been tremendous. Also note that I have the clutch slave cylinder extender rod. But seriously I don't know what you read about act but I am not going to switch this clutch when it goes I will replace it with the exact same one. and you can't beat the price psi throws down for them. trust me when I tell you i BEAT THE SHIT out of my car clutch/turbo engine drivetrain etc etc. the clutch now is the furthest thing from my mind. hell if you buy an act 2600 with sprung street disc and don't like it I will buy it off you for future usage.

Jason, I realize you are a little biased, but that isnt 100% true. I'm almost positive that you are right, each of the street disks are the same. However you can go with a sprung hub pucked disk and it will hold considerably more power. I'm pretty sure the ACT "Xtreme" is the 2600, and the street disk on that holds 400 ft lbs compared to the sprung 6 puck disk that holds 513 ft lbs. Hell, even the ACT "Heavy Duty" (pretty sure this is the 2100) with the sprung 6 puck holds 412 ft lbs. The pressure increase on the 2100 is supposed to be 27% and the 2600 is supposedly 48%.

In my own opinion, if you are having trouble with anything equivalent to or less than a 2600 then you need to take your ass to the gym once in a while. I've been doing quite a bit of city driving on mine and yes its noticable, but its no where near wearing my leg out, even on a 45 minute to an hour city drive.

I have a 2600 with sprung hub 6 puck disk and I agree with Stevie, best clutch I've ever driven. It gets a little chattery at first, but once you get used to it its not a big deal at all. Engagement is quick, but not unmanagable by any means.

The other alternatives I'd suggest follow Jason's, go with a Zoom. They are Fidanza rebrands. The Fidanza stage 3.2 is rated at 395 ft lbs and is only $340 here (http://www.maperformance.com/store/product.php?productid=16366&cat=419&page=1) where its Zoom counterpart is $330 here (http://www.maperformance.com/store/product.php?productid=16384&cat=425&page=1). i want a heaver clutch, my clutch as it is is pu$$y the stocker is slipping because i guess i'm making more power then it can hold at 22psi on the 16g and pretty good timing... so its time... so steveik, you would recommend ACT? and thore aswell? i trust you guys much more then some fool who's posting threads up on dsmtuners...

I just bought mine from extreme psi. Personally I don't even shop around for prices. If I need a performance part, the first place I look is extremepsi, and if they have it, then I buy it regardless of the price. They are just a great company to deal with IMO, compared to any place I have ever purchased from. They are knowledgeable, nice, competitivly priced, and shipping is super quick. Lol, I sound like a rep. from them.

i read a thread about someones disk getting all jacked up after 500 miles, then another guy had the springs pop out, and jacked up the disk and flywheel, and then everyone was posting about how much better this clutch is then that one, and blah blah blah, but i was thinking that all the issues people had could EASILY be from an install error... so extremepsi is the place to get your clutch... i'll look into it right now! thanks guys!

any comments on the ACT streetlite Chrome-moly flywheel??

Lando is a mod on tuners... and yes, they do have good info there. When I get bored I like to go there and read tech articles.
