I would suspect the Ignition control module.
If you are getting fuel + spark, the timing needs tobe right!

any way to test that? and would that just go bad randomly?

Check with Advance Auto,I had a Mustang when it reached operating Temp
the Timing would be off ,and Advance Auto Tested it as being bad.
I would buy a new one at a discount for troubleshooting and having the Spare part.
GOOGLE -> 3000GT IGNITION MODULE
What Elements do you need for a fire?
Fuel,Spark,and Air!
A faulty MAF can cause a car not to start!
The Massive Air flow signal sends a electrical signal to the ECU for Air+fuel mix.

Question about ptu, my spark plug wires seam to always have a loose connection at the coils were i can like push them down and get a click out of them, could this cause my ptu to go bad and cause my spark to not be sparking at correct time? bc i have fuel and spark but car wont start, the spark looks a little weak but it was sunny out so could have just been the sun making it look weak. i ordered a new ptu bc ive read that they control spark timing so im guessing its just sparking at the wrong time bc it seams it wants to start but wont.

What happens If you turn up a radio with out the speakers connected ?
Theres no load on the system and the finals can blow!
How old + the miliage on your Spark plug wires?

I would start with some basic routine maintenance.
1) Radium Spark plugs + gap.
2) New Spark plug wires.
3) Clean MAF sensor + Oxygen sensors with MAF sensor cleaner.
4) Clean throat of Thottle body with WD40 + Oil fog spray.
(Exercise the throttle plate).
5)Buy a new Air + fuel filter Too.
Trust me,you will find your lost horse power!
Sometimes just by doing routine maintenance you can resolve Issues.

If it were the MAS, it should at least start, and run poorly for a few seconds, but you can check by going full throttle, (where it could also be an intake leak, but not likely to happen randomly, unless there is a vacuum line issue) at WOT, the ECU runs off of a fuel map, and not the signal sent by the MAS, so try starting your car at WOT.
Take out the plugs and inspect them, and look to see what type of damage is done to them, if any. That will lead you to the cause of spark issue.
To see if your wires are bad, run your car at night in the dark, look under the hood for little sparks that don't belong there.
Fuel filter should still be good, air filter is a good $10.00 investment though. I can sell you my K&N drop in filter for cheap (not the FIPK).
Did you do the simple thing and check your battery? Or more importantly your alternator?
All in all, I am willing to bet your issue has to do with the ignition coils and the loose wires, rather than your PTU. When I went to the Florida3S Tampa Gathering a few months ago, a guys VR4 lost a lot of power, and he was running only on 3 cylinders. It ended up being he needed to adjust the wires on the coils.
Good luck.

Even if the timing was off by a tooth or two it would most likely still start, just run like dogshit and bend valves. Interesting that instead it decided not to start and save your motor. Wonder how you threw the timing off inbetween running of the engine...

One or two teeth will not bend valves. I've seen people go as as far 3 and 4 teeth off and not bend vavles.

I guess it's a luck of the draw then. I know people that have been off a tooth or two on a 4g63 and have bent valves. Granted they are different motors, but the chance is still there.

well, heres the deal when i did my water pump i f*ed up and didnt get the timing belt tight enough, it was one tooth loose. so it just slipped when i tried to start my car. and u guys are talking about 1 2 3 or 4 teeth off... well i wont even tell u how far off mine was bc it would make ur guys nuts hurt thinking about it. and my engine is fine no bent valve or anything, she is still as good as she was no problems thank god. and i guess it just shows how strong these motors are. good thing it didnt start bc then there would be bad damage. but i got lucky as hell and learned my lesson on the timing belt, and will never screw it up again. but i reset timing rite this time.
