2001 Lincoln LS sunroof won't open

I have a 2001 Lincoln LS and the sunroof doesn't open properly. When I push the button to open it, it only opens about a 1/4 of an inch. I have to keep hitting the button to slowly open the sunroof a 1/4" at a time. I can push the button forward to close the sunroof, closing it works fine. It just does't open or tilt open properly.
Has anyone had this happen? It seems to be the switch and not the motor, since it closes fine. Help.

I don't recall seeing anyone else post on this forum about similar issues, but you should use the "Search this forum" feature from the Lincoln LS forum main page to find out.
I took a quick look at the wiring diagram and my thought would be one or two of the limit switches in the motor assembly is faulty. Of, the track mechanism could be binding (grease became gummy) and causes the current sense to stop the motor. When closing the roof, does it go at a normal speed or does that seem slower than usual?
I believe the switch assembly contains momentary switches that provide a signal to the "Roof Opening Panel Module" and that module then directs current to the motor assembly. The motor assembly appears to contain limit switches to turn off the current flow when the panel reaches one of the limits.
Does the roof panel open properly when using the remote open feature (hold "Unlock" button on key fob to roll down all windows and open the roof panel). If so, you know the motor assembly and module are fine and the problem is likely the switch. If not, then you know the switch is not the problem.
Also, if you know someone with a professional scan tool that can access the body codes, see if there are any B or U codes which may indicate where the problem lies.

Thanks for the reply! Closing does seem to go at normal speed. Good point about the remote open feature, it does not open all the way - only about a 1/4" then stops.

Tom, please post your responses on the thread you started so the next person who searchs for this issue can see what your symptoms are and hopefully what you find to fix it.
Since the remote open feature works similar to the switch in the car, my first suspect would be the motor and limit switches, next would be the roof opening panel module. I would start by pulling the motor assembly, opening it up, and seeing if cleaning the limit switches will fix it, or if I can order new switches from Digi-Key or Mouser. This may require taking out the headliner which probably isn't a fun task. I guess I'd actually start by connecting my scan tool and looking for codes, but not everyone has access to a scan tool that can read the body codes.

Rod,
The sunroof is now not closing smoothly either. It will close a few inches an then stop. I push the button again and it goes another few inches and stops. I can pull the headliner down slightly and I can see the motor and I hear a click noise when it stops coming from the black box to the right of the motor which I think is what you call the roof opening panel module. It sounds like a contact closing. So, where are the limit switches? Are they inside the cylinder part of the motor assembly? I may have found a scanner I can use.

According to the service manual for the 2002 model year, the motor assembly is mounted to the roof opening panel module. There is also a timing procedure that needs to be performed when installing either items.
According to the wiring diagram for the motor assembly, there are three switches within the motor assembly that I assume are limit switches. There would be one for closed, one for tilt up, and one for slide open.
Maybe somehow the timing is off and going through the timing procedure would solve your issues temporarily. Either way, it sounds like anything you do will require having the headliner out.
