So the other night my good buddy TerminalVelocity was down in town and was showing him the new G8. I told him I think it maybe faster than my old Nova which I sold to another friend.
I told him to call him up, ask if he's interested. A quick text message later and we got a simple reply... "Yes."
Later that night we got together and hung out, did the usual bull crap you do at Starbucks... laugh at the highschool kids in the run down cars thinking they're totally sweet. (... man those were the days!)
We ran a few times, but they all were pretty much crap. Neither one of us had good launches or we left at the wrong times, or we had traffic. They were all caught on film with my little digi camcorder. Unfortunately, the footage wasn't that great... mostly because the races weren't that great.
But here's a short clip of us at a light, waiting to go. It seems like he had a bit of a stumble coming off the line which helped me greatly, plus I've got LSD/traction control. He has an open diff... so not so great for him.
A solid 400hp 383ci (6.3L) V8, roughly a 3500lbs car. Two passengers.
My car making a rated 361hp 6.0L V8, 4000lbs... two passengers.
I'll get more at another time, and a better video... Enjoy, it's not much but it's a little something.

Whow, Man I didnt know you got a G8! thats fucking awsome, that makes our cars like cousins and shit.
I saw the thread on the non-specific but I figured it was another discussion thread like the one about the GT-R 35.
Thats freaking wicked. Now I have to go to L.A. fo shizzle.

That car sounds amazing, the G8 sure has some balls if you ask me. Nice little cam action going with the Nova :) get yourself some of those for the G8! The transmission seemed to be right at home going fast, which is pretty awesome.

Yeah, that Nova has some nuts to it. Pretty quick. I'll try and get us lined up again in a better setting when we both can get in a good run.
He didn't come off the line as hard as he could of... That was the first time we got lined up, I don't think he expected me to go 100%. After that we never really got lined up just did a few rolling runs but kept getting stopped by traffic.
Next time though! :)

Those G8s are sick. When we had our ride and drive we were power sliding them all over the place and doing burnouts, then much to the chagrin of the organizers, we started racing them and the Chargers they had, lol. I saw somewhere that with a tune they are damned near flat thirteen cars, and sprayed ones are getting into the 12s. Almost makes me want to get one of those instead of one of the other cars I'm thinking about. Almost.

I believe I read in car&drive or some other car mag that you can swap out the G8's motor with an LS7 without much alteration. Something about changing the G8 to a dry sump lube system. Or maybe I dreamt that article. :)

A company in Australia has already swapped in a LS7 into the Commodore (G8). It was an article in one of those magazines if I'm not mistaken. I have just about every magazine that has the G8 in it.
I knew more about the G8 than the sales people at my dearlership. I was selling the car to them...

So far, only the GXP will come with the Manual. The GT might later on next year though...

is that when the car shuts down some cylinders so it saves gas?
or is pontiac's version when the engine actually cuts fuel all together and lets you coast until you reach your destination.

It's GM's technology of shutting cylinders down to save fuel.

lol how can cruising at 65-70mph on cruise control not be using it right?
If you enter engineering mode, you can see when it switches between 4 and 8 cylinders... it barely will stay in 4 at cruising. If you hit the slightest raise in the road the car switches to 8. The 4 don't have the power to carry the load at even a 1% grade for 300ft to travel over an overpass which you can then coast down the backside.
*sigh*
I wish it was an 8-6-4 system, I'd much rather see it go from 4-6 over a slight raise. At least then it'll be some what efficient still. But to just simply go from econo to suck with no inbetween or with no 'chance' to let the 4 carry the load over the slightest flaw in the road surface is unacceptable.
Telling me it'll do 25+mpg and it only returning 21mpg is a joke. With that sort of mileage the car won't even go 400 miles on the highway. I don't know why, but it irks me to think that I'd have to fuel up once to get up to where my grandparents live.

The 8-6-4 system worked. A buddy of mine had a ...hmm I forget the year Cadillac. But it had the 8-6-4 system and he commuted in it everyday, 60 miles one way. Did 3,000 miles a month.
He drove it across the country a few years back, we followed in a 1990 Honda civic si hatchy. And he was getting regularly 25-29mpg. The Honda was struggling to get 30-32mpg with all our stuff in the car. His brother in the Caddy had the A/C on full blast laughing at us in the Honda...
If you kept up on the maintanence of the system, it worked pretty good.
Still, with 20+ years of technology under their belts. GM should be able to perfect the concept.

the fuel managment of 8-6-4 works well for an 8cyl car. relize gm has been doing it longer than most people think.
but i've got a question, does the g8 really handle as well as the mags state?
also i think a gxp version will have a 6spd

from what i read in a motor trend article there's only going to be like 3g between the ss and the base model corvette, and only aroud 5hp difference.
it's still a car that usually people dont care about gas milage when buying. if its good it's just a bonus to it. like a 911, it can get 28mpg, pretty good for a 345hp sports car, the gas milage is just one more sellign point, no gas guzller tax.
let me ask, when u bought ur srt4 did u mind that it only gets like 25mpg, or were u buying it for the 230hp and 230tq, and its ability to still pick up kids or friends, and go to the grocery store?

The msrp of a new corvette is 46k. There is no way the camaro ss will start out at over 32k.
I think at 30k people are still very aware of gas mileage. Again, the 911 comment seems silly seeing as they sell for more than double that for a base model.
Before I bought the car I had read of people getting 30mpg on the highway. This was a big selling point for me since I commute to san fran every week. Im getting roughly 28mpg which isnt amazing, but is nice considering the power the car is currently putting down. I had a guy who owned an evo asking me about the car one time. Because gas prices were so high and the awd was hurting his mileage so much he was thinking of trading his car in. Just because a car is focused on performance doesnt mean that mileage wont have an impact on the buyers decision.

the v6 camaro is supposed to start at 25g, so very likely the v8 ss will start a bit of 30g, add options and it'll b right under the vette msrp. don;'t believe me, the challenger srt8 starts at 38g, right where the camaro v8 would sit in terms of performance. same idea as porsche, fully loaded cayman s is 70g base 911 is 72g, they don't leave a gap open, it makes u choose icon or new car(chevy would b icon or icon).
as for the 911 it doesnt matter how much it sells for, it's still a sports car, still capable of returning better than 28mpg.
all i know, when i buy a car with over 250hp, i tend not to care about its gas milage, if its good, awsome, if not, o well.
the camaro is being marketed to the wrong crowd anyways, so if it gets good gas milage it'll sell, bad gas milage it'll be gone after 2012

I like the camaro alot, the challenger seems like a more expensive nostalgia purchase if you want to spend high 30K for a heavy rwd car that doesnt handle particularly awesome but has the name behind it. The camaro is cheaper, lighter, apparently handles better, as fast or faster, and has a new design

camaro's always tended to outhandle its competitors...it was used in trans am racing and other forms of racing even till today with the last gens. chevy used the suspension learning from racing on the camaro and firebird. it's the reason the camaro will be more expensive than the mustang too, better suspension, not something pulled from the 60's

Cobalt ss - fastest fwd production time on the 'ring. Probably the fastest car you can buy for under 25k.
G8- most powerful car you can buy brand new for less than 30k.
Camaro- Most powerful of the three pony cars and will have the handling to back it up.
Corvette- zo6 and zr1 are putting cars three times as much to shame. Even the run of the mill z51 is an amazing car for the money.
Malibu- Actually taking away some sales from accord and camry, and looks pretty damn good considering.
Of course they still have a lot to work out, but when compared to ford or chrysler they are looking pretty good.

i think that gm should push the onstar a lot more. it's great in the malibu commercial, when the woman asks/says, calls for emergency when you cant, something the accord or camry can't do

Cobalt SS FTMFW. even though mine isnt turbo'd or the exact same thing, Im faster than a stock TC. Bargain Rockets are my favorite :D
As much as I hate to admit it, they are doing better than Ford. I am NOT a chevy fan by any stretch of the imagination. I actually hate most of them. But Ill give them respect when its due. I still shame them forever for creating the Aveo (which is below even the Probe) and the Cavalier.
And the onstar thing, the other car companies cars are just so much faster when you DO get in a crash, there is no chance in HELL you made it out alive, so they didnt bother with onstar to ask if you are ok. Thats my theory anyways.

Bargin rockets are the best way to go. :D
Its funny, if you own a certain brand of car people assume that you are loyal to them. I own a dodge but thats only because by some magic voodoo they were able to make a car that was made for an enthusiast. Everything they have put out(save for the viper and nsrt) is absolute shit. People seem to have a hard time understanding that just because you bought one car from a company doesnt mean you are a nuthugger for it.
If I had waited a couple of years to buy a new car I would have probably bought an ms3, fast foward even more and I probably would have gotten a cobalt ss/tc.
A lot of nsrt guys bash the cars listed above, but in truth they really are better cars. Dont even get me started on the caliber srt-4, that thing just makes me want to cry. I could care less which brand makes it, just give me the best bang for the price limit that I have and I will buy it. People seem to put way to much emphasis on car companies these days, it has never made sense to me.

i think the acr neons were good, maybe not a shitload of power, but a decent car in terms of handling performance, even better than the standard neon, who mite i say had(according to many tests) the most power and best handling in class.
i owned a neon, i was a great first car, but other than an srt4 neon or cobalt ss/t, i likely wont be buying a domestic car...well the viper or saleen s7 or mosler mt900

only one issue with that...the new cobalt ss isn't supercharged it's turbo'd...so cobalt ss/t. it uses the motor out of the gxp solstice and sky redline, the 2.0l turbocharged 4-cyl making around 260hp, my guess a lil detuned for the cobalt, only cause of the fwd and i dont think gm wants it to become an srt4 neon case with being damn hard to insure
thank you, next

Um, he owns a cobalt, he obviously knows the difference between the s/c and t/c models. Next...

yea...but he corrected me in my ss/t...i dont want a cobalt ss/sc, i wouldnt buy a used cobalt, likely it's been beaten on a lil, i'd rather a new one, which means it's turbo'd. which from how he worded it, he didnt know.

oh trust me I knew. I was just kidding because I have one, so naturally I defend the Supercharger over the Turbo. I prefer it because for 500 bucks I can get about 60 horsepower :) Easier to mod in my opinion. I just like being different.
I know all about the SS/T. Understandable mistake though. SCs were made into 2007, Ts started in 08, so I knew that it couldnt be new. You also didnt mention that it had to be new, especially since you mentioned an nsrt... also cant be new.
So yes, I knew what was going on. I just come across as a retard. It happens.

ok. as for the ss/t i think give it a yr and people will find very easy ways/cheap ways to get some power out of it.
as for the nsrt4, i'm hoping that dodge relizes that a 300hp caliber is a dumb idea, and they bring the neon out for the srt4 run agian....mite b a dream but you never know.

Apparently dodge is going to have something similar in spirit to the neon showing up around 2010. A couple years too late. By that time Im going to seriously think about toyotas new ae86.

The calibur is the ass-ugliest car I have ever seen other than the Magnum.
So by similar in spirit I hope you mean the SRT-4 side of it, not the econo-turd side of it.
Toyota needs to start making some damn performance cars again. I thought I heard somewhere that the Supra was coming back not too long from now? That might have been the NSX but I could have sworn it said Supra.

The new Supra has been coming out long before the Mk IV was even put down. It wont. They were going to bring it over as a Lexus, and try to sell it at 200K a whack. They just recently all but axed the project, saying that there is no reason to bring that car to market in our current economy, and that its "performance numbers" didn't stand. They were claiming it ran a six minute lap at the 'Ring, but had no proof.
Toyota would kill itself trying to market a sports car again. They've left that niche behind. If they try to do it, they'll need to market it has a Scion because they are supposed to be (but failing miserably) at being the toyota youth brand. By allowing Nissan to bring the GTR over uncontested, Toyota has basically dropped any chance they have at a new Supra or such. The only way it would be succseful is if it were priced and actually sold under 60k, totally dominate in all shapes and forms the GTR, and was made mass available.

I mean a light, simple, sedan. So I guess thats the econ-turd side haha.
Like I said, Toyota is working together with Subaru to make a cheap(People are saying as low as 14-15k) rwd, light car.
Nissan is also doing something similar, they are going to make a poor mans 350z. Its going to use the 350z chassis and a sentra se-r motor supposedly. All this for around 20k.
These are two cars that have my attention currently for a dd whore.
As for Scion, I think they did a great job with their first generation of cars. But now the xB is too heavy, lost a lot of what made it special. The xD is just so-so, and the tC should have been replaced already.

2 door Altima looks pretty damn close to me, good ol VQ35. Little more expensive to be qualified as "poor mans" but its a happy medium.
Toyota would kill itself trying to market a sports car again
Haha that reminds me, some guy on the local version of ebay had the headline RARE SPORTS CAR. Click on it and what do I find?
