Oil Pump Rebuild Difficulty

2000 Grand Prix 3.8.
Can anyone tell me the difficulty of rebuild and exact location of the oil pump in this engine.
I know that I have to drop the pan, but would like more information.

What is your current mileage and what reason for rebuilding or replacing the oil pump? The hard part will be removing the oil pan.

The car has 97,000 miles. At times all of the lifters begin chattering and the car misses. I feel that it is starving for oil. Batbee just be a partially clogged screen on the snorkle. I just want to have a back-up plan if the pan is dropped and nothing is found. We put Lucasoil in it and it seems to be getting better.

Well, if the oil pressure was too low you should get the low oil pressure light at the IP. Have you checked oil pressure with an external gauge? Also, what brand oil filter are you using and weight engine oil? That would be a lot of work to find out the oil pump or pickup wasn't the issue.

We are currnetly running 10W30 with a quart of Lucasoil and STP filters. We have gone the other way with 10W40 with STP oil treatment. That was the wrong way to go.

I use Havoline 10W30 in my '97 with no other additives. Now has 345,000 miles on it and still doesn't use oil between changes of 5000 miles. I know a lot of people swear by these snake oils but I've never had the need for them.
You might want to visit the bobistheoilguy.com website and search for threads about flushing the engine. Can't remember the name of the product a lot of them use to clean the engine out but they claim good results.
If you have a miss in the engine it may not even be oil related and you would be going to a lot of trouble dropping the pan on one of these.
