i went to charge the ac on 2000 rodeo, and went to advance auto parts and guy told me i needed 3 bottles of 134. So i bought a big one with a useable gauge with hose, it was 18 oz and had a rust preventer and oil in it along with the 134.So i put the first bottle in with no problem, and with the gauge was reading brown on gauge meaning i needed more, so i went to put in bottle number 2 that was 12 oz and it started to go up to blue line meaning it was in safe area and filling up,i almost put the whole bottle in it and then the clutch started to kick on and off about every 2 seconds,(it doesn't sound good) so i released a little 134 and clutch was still the same. so i called advance and the guy said to put in the other 12 oz bottle and the clucth would slow down! well i did put in most of it , and disconnected can and there was just a little left that came out of can. meanwhile clitch is still kicking on and off like crazy. I know i lost a little 134 in the process, do i need to put a little more in it or do i need to take some out. Also it is blowing out a little cool but not cold and not enough to cool down the car. am afraid to run it like that anyway, don't want to damage system till i find out what is wrong! Also i was driving by another parts store and was going to buy one more can of 134 and explain to guy what car was doing and he said he would take it to mechenic, and also said i have plenty 134 in it now. any suggestions would be appreciated and advice. thank you in advance

If your system was empty you probably have air in it. Not a good thing. A/C problems are best delt with by an a/c shop. They can find the leak, fix it, put a vacuum on the system to remove all the air and moisture, then weigh in the exact amount of refrigerant needed.

Most likely it is tripping off on high head pressure due to air or over charge.

+1 ^^^^^

They really need to ban these stupid self-service kits for A/C. I'm a HUGE DIY'er but I know enough to leave A/C to properly trained pros.

I'll admit, I was fortunate on the one I used a couple weeks ago - it filled up and my a/c is cool. I have wondered about the safety of these though too, especially when I disconnected and the stuff was squirting all over! I thought of the stories of the older R-13 or whatever the number of people going blind with that stuff.

Guess what I did friday after work? Recharged my system LOL. But I do have a set of real gauges and have an idea of what I'm doing (I'm a commercial HVAC tech). Just couldnt take the drive in a black truck with '97 deg temps anymore. Mine was pretty low, put over 1lb into it. I dont know much about 134a systems but I do know the high side should be more then 100 psi when its almost 100 deg outside. I had to look around for some 134a without seal conditioner and all the other junk in it though.

If we get decent weather this fall instead of upper 90's straight to 30's within a week I'm still going to get mine evactuated then replace the dryer and have it recharged. Though mine seems to be working perfect for the first time ever right now.
