Remove Vinyl top questions...

Hello all,

Has anyone removed a top from a 1990+ caprice??

Prior to my buying it the actula vinyl was removed, but not the composite like shell. It looks like maybe the top originally consisted of vinyl glued to this composite shell like material the is then glued to the sheet metal. I am sure you all have seen what I mean.

BUT has anyone removed one, mine already looks silly, the prior owner removed the vinyl and painted the composite, although it could look worse, I would still like to remove it completely.

Is there anything to it besides tear it off and be prepared to remove the glue and possible rust? ( I don't expect rust, the car has none and it is a AZ car.)

You can carefully use a razor scraper to scrape the stuff off. Just keep a nice, sharp blade in the scraper - once the blade dulls, it will bite into the paint.

"Arizona car" and "rust free" are, sadly, no longer synonymous. ADOT now uses salt on the northern roads instead of just cinders to remove ice. I've seen this myself as I live in this state and drive the northern roads with some frequency.

Yah and a car that's "rust free" might make you a liar as soon as you remove the vinyl top. My top on my '87 just peeled right off real easy but I imagine that's because of how rusty it was under there. Big thanks to GM for not painting under there
