Quick question Re: MrHobby Clear

I bought a couple of cans of MrHobby's clear coat because several members on this website suggested it worked better when sprayed over decals then other brands such as Tamiya. I tried it and it worked nicely. Now this was about two years ago and since then I've added a new hobby to my life and been going back and forth between RCs and scale models. Anyway, to avoid getting off the subject, I ran out of MrHobby clear coat and went to my LHS to purchase some more, but they didnt have what I normally bought. Instead, they had the large silver can. Now I dont understand Japanese but looking at the words I noticed they look similar. My question is, is this the same thing only in a larger can? Is the silver can also friendly when sprayed over decals? I remember similar threads to this were posted up before and I remember asking a question in which someone replyed that I steer clear from the silver can and get the blue can. Is this the same except MrHobby offers their clear coat paints in two different can sizes?

Topcoat is water-soluble acrylic (like Mr. Aqueous Hobby Color and Tamiya Acrylic that come in bottles), while Mr. Super Clear is solvent-based acrylic (like the bottled Mr. Color, Mr. Color spray and Tamiya spray). The paint film of water-soluble acrylic tends to be softer, so it's a bit hard to achieve a mirror-like surface after polishing. Also, Mr. Hobby Topcoat is relatively easier on decals, but if you have to moisten already-applied decals with any type of paint, take usual precaution--always start with a few mist coat.

Hey Hiroaki, do you think we could get the Mr. color bottles in the states in the near future? I received a promotional email from greatmodels.com telling that they maybe could be able to get the "enamels". I know they are famous in Japan, where you get them in the hobby shops, like Finisher's ones, without any problem.

Let me know. I don't think so. It'll be too costly to legalize products that sell for only $1.00-2.00 each--they would have to sell a whole bunch!

And that letter is confusing, because as far as Japanese hobby paints are concerned, only Tamiya makes enamel. Pretty much everything else in Japan is solvent or water-based acrylic.

Hmm i been using the silver bottle since i started modelling and been shoting on wet coats from the start.... and i never screwed up a decal YET. My decals are soften with mark softer then usually i let them dry before spraying clear

whats a good site to get finisher paints? Is it worth it with shipping anyway to get them into the states?

I think that maybe what they meant was talking, as what happened in the past, on the synthetic lacquers as "altered enamels", if you compare them with automotive lacquers, which I think are real lacquers.

Another question to Hiroaki, why can be obtained the lacquers from Tamiya, and not the ones from gunze, which I personally consider better ones?

Since Tamiya sells a lot of these can paints, they should consider sell tham also in 10ml bottles as Gunze does.

What about more of the Finisher's and Modeler's stuff in our shores, that's real material to play!

As I was going through my cans for some black paint I ran into a brand new can of TopCoat that I didnt know I still had. I thought of the conversation I had last time I was at my LHS and a question came up that I wanted to ask on here.

Last time I was at my LHS I noticed they still hadnt restocked their line of TopCoat. When I was paying for my things I asked them about it. I had an empty can with me and showed it to them. One of the guys mentioned that Mr. Hobby no longer makes the small blue spray can of TopCoat. Is that true? If so, what other clear coat does Mr. Hobby have that is closest to their TopCoat (according to hirofkd, a water-soluble acrylic clear)?

They haven't quit making it; but I do know that Stevens Int'l, a hobby distributor, dropped the Gunze/Mr. Hobby line of paint recently because there's something in the paint that makes it illegal to sell in the US. So that's likely why your LHS isn't getting it anymore. You can still buy it from HLJ, where it's in-stock. The US prices for it were insane anyway, it's cheaper just to buy a few cans from HLJ when making a kit purchase to stock up.

Interesting. Thanks for the info Zoom. Im going to have to keep this information in mind about HLJ. I might end up buying my clear coat bottles from them unless they dont ship paints into the US.
