Hey guys,
I have a buddy with a 94 subaru impreza with an automatic trans. He came out a bank, started his car, tried to put it in reverse but it was a no go. Nothing--as if he was in neutral--the engine just revs when he pushes on the gas. He got the car towed, and now the forward gears work but still no reverse. The car has 145k miles.
Anybody have any clue what this could be? The mechanic didn't even look at it but just said it needs a new tranny to the tune of $2000. Could this be a fluid/filter problem? (the fluids are topped off)
Thanks.

Most likely this is internal assuming the linkage is adjusted, not damaged or nothing hit the the trans pan and did damage, the fluid and filter change will not correct this.

Who needs reverse anyway? Nothing a little push can't solve!

Don't know about this car, but a lot of newer transmissions have pressure switches and harness' to go bad. They can cause it not to apply a "gear" or apply two "gears" at once. (Burning up the trans in the process)
Older transmissions can be low on fluid and reverse is the first to go. (or have a plugged filter)
Either way, I would bet if the trans isn't toasted now, it will be soon.
Just put a trap door in the floor board. When you need to back up, pop it open and Fred Flintstone it backwards.

I had a dream last night where my car had a hole in the floor for my feet so i could "pedal" it. I was chasing another car, but i lost them because i couldn't get up a hill. :frown:
