hello:
thx for the opportunity to post.
Have a 2000 cherokee (http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/showthread.php?t=901407#) sport that was recharged in 2007---lasted about 6 months; now in 2008---all hot air. The compressor does cycle intermitantly---so it seems the system is not totally empty.
Do not want to spend a lot to get it fixed---I am hoping another recharge will get me through the summer and maybe a trade-in to a dealer (http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/showthread.php?t=901407#).
I bought a recharge kit--I am not dumb---but--I have never used one of these.
It is a 134a kit with a guage. it says to locate the "low side port"---How do I determine which is low side---both have a black plug but the one closest to the firewall is a larger metal line. The one furthest is a smaller line.
I do not want to blow myself up trying to save a few bucks--but--would like to try it to see if it works.
any help for a dumbhead is appreciated
peace to you!

Did you read the directions? It will only fit the low side port.

thx for your reply
the directions were not that specific---they just said to first find the low side port. That was it!

OK. Take both caps off. The connector on the can will only fit one and will "snap" onto it. Since it's cycling frequently, it likely does have some charge but is problably low as you suspect. Fill with one can and see it it improves.
If your can has a gauge on it, it better than nothing. Make sure you don't overcharge it.

A common source of leakage is at the condensor in front of the radiator.
Also check for refrigeration oil leakage at all the hose joints.
