CD's of 2008 Review Thread

OK So I've picked up a bunch of new CD's this year, I'll add them all later, but for now, I wish to review Watershed.
Opeth
Watershed
It seems like when they got their new guitarist, and new drummer, that something changed. Was it for the better? or worse? I haven't quite figured it out yet, but one thing is for sure, this album is sticking on me like dried wood clue. It's easy to peal off, but the impression remains.
Although I'm having a hard time to get into this album, that is exactly what I want. When I listen to an progressive band, I WANT to hate it first, if I like it first off the bat, something is wrong. This album, on first listen, didn't appeal much to me, much like this album wouldn't seem much to anyone who has never heard Opeth before, or understand their style, their progression.
Then we come to the second song off the CD, and it's all blown away, and you suddenly realise, and remember why you fell in love with Opeth in the first place, it's the unpredictableness. That's not even a word, but it is now. Unpredictableness. No one predicted Benighted, or Deliverance, or even Damnation, followed by Ghost Reveries. Who the hell saw that one coming?
This album, Watershed, is like being pushed off the insane tree and hitting every branch on the way down, but each branch is made up of linnen cloth and pie.
When you finish this album, you are not quite to sure what you heard, or even if you liked it, so you listen to it again, and you pick things up you didn't hear in the first place, and again, and again, and that's when you realise this album is awesome, and is the possible the only good release that metal will offer us this year. Then you realise, that this is the best album you've bought since for nearly 2 years. Fuck, this album is awesome.
10/10. Opeth, you did it again. :grinyes:
Three Month Update:
After listening to this album pretty much non-stop since release, I am confident to say this is their best release ever. They have mastered progression, and this album just screams perfection.
This is the greatest metal CD of the year. It's such a shame that Metallica's abortion of a fetus they call Death Magnetic is just total shit and does not deserve the retarded hype that it's given, this album, Watershed is what Metal stands for, and if you don't like it, you don't know metal.
Disturbed
Indestructable
I don't know how to describe this album. I've read a few reviews and I disagree with every single one. They all say that because the band have taken over producing roles, that the album has taken a less-commercial view. What the fuck? So hiring a big-name multi-million dollar pop princess producer has down-filled this album? Asshole.
This album, a metal album, written, recorded and produced by a metal band, for metal listeners, I think is one of the best releases this year, next to Watershed.
The album starts off awesome, and ends awesome, and there isn't a split second of un-awesomeness in the mix, ever.
The opening song, for example, opens the album the opposite direction 10,000 fists did, instead of music (of some crazy Asian instruments) is the siren of war, and the sound of warfare, how awesome. This song reminds me of Judas Priest for some reason.
The Night is an awesome song, and if I can compare, is this albums Stricken. However, not.
Right through to Criminal (which has an awesome outro too) to the final song Facade is a breathe of fresh air, knowing that what you just listened to was awesome, and was one of their strongest works.
I'll agree it isn't a good as their previous release (Ten Thousand Fists) it is a metal album I'll be playing at the next piss up.
9/10
Three Month Update:
Not much really to update, but the novelty of this album has worn off, yet Ten Thousand Fists remains on my play list frequently. Inside The Fire is one of the most depressing songs of metal, the song is about a friend of David's (vocals) who committed suicide in their teens. The music is fantastic, and the song live rocks. If I were to re-rate, I'd downgrade to 7.5/10
Sevendust
Chapter Seven: Hope and Sorrow
When I got Alpha, I didn't actually like it. I love Sevendust, one of my fav bands, but Alpha did not turn me on. But nonetheless, I bought Chapter VII.
On first listen, the weird opening of inside almost made me turn it off straight away, but I pushed through the mud to find a very clear track and actually started thinking "what's up with Alpha?". This is actually not that bad.
The initial music that pumped through my headphones was an extremely heavily compressed bass kick and electro-drum kit. Then the actual song starts at 1:20, and I am liking this alot! Now I have high expectations for the rest of the record.
Half of Alter Bridge (3/4 of Creed)...(the better 3/4) appeared on this record over a few songs, Hope and Sorrow (not sure if that has anything to do with the title of the album), and these songs are awesome, the low-cut depressing feel of Hope, completely turns around the opposite direction and when played next to Sorrow sounds like a sequal to each other which is rare in music.
The highlight of the album is Prodigal Son which is this album's Enemy and is possibly the strongest track on the album, and finishes this album with that "itch" of the Sevendust bite that needs to be scratched every damn day.
Overal, this album rocks. I love it, and although is not their strongest, nor can be contrasted next to their older material, more like a growing baby, this release is way batter than Alpha (which I think is their weakest), and I give this album a sound:
8/10
In Flames
Sense of Purpose
When I think of In Flames, I think of the scientific FACT that The Jester Race is one of the best metal CD's of ALL TIME, but no one knows what happened between Clayman and Soundtrack, but it wasn't good.
Reroute to Remain was a kick ass album, but Soundtrack was just crap. My Sweet Shadow was prob the only cool song on the album, Come Clarity, 05, was WAY better, and a breath of fresh air.
However, I think Sense of Purpose is a huge let down.
Although I think it's the best they're done since 2001, this is on par with Come Clarity, but not as good.
The opening track, The Mirrors Truth is so awesome, it almost gives you a hard on, but for some reason, the awesomeness stops there.
I dunno, this album, just not what I would call In Flames, It screams of unused Come Clarity riffs, which sound like rejected Reroute to Remain riffs. It's not a bad album, it's just if you close your eyes and forget you're listening to In Flames, it just might sound good
4/10
Metallica
Death Magnetic
Most of the albums I purchase, I would of heard at least 3-5 songs of the album, either from the bands Myspace, their website that has some songs up, or leaked mp3's surfaced onto YouTube.
However, in the case of Death Magnetic, the album was half released on their site, 6 mp3's, live versions of the song at Ozfest, a music video and heaps of material in samples from the album over a string of week-by-week slow release of the album, and I will put it out now that I did not like anything I heard, nor did I enjoy any of the full songs they released.
But I went to the Death Magnetic release in Sydney last night (12.01am Saturday Sept 13th) and bought the album.
The album cover is awesome, way more awesome than the last....20 years they've put out material, mine is a 3D 'digipack' that resembles Tool's Lateralus in the form of a front-to-back cut out of a coffin. Awesome.
But the music is a desperate attempt to revive something that just can't come back from the dead.
No one, in the history of pie, has anyone made a successful comeback from such a hugely departed picture, reverted back to the original drawings almost 20 years on.
Granted, this is the heaviest Metallica have been since ...And Justice For All. However, I'm not convinced it was the right move. This is to me seems to be an almost correction that was the abortion of St. Anger. What strikes me is that the band pretty much admit the album was shit [St. Anger] yet turn around and do almost the same thing with the new album minus the mistakes of the previous album?
Jeff Goldblum said in Jurassic Park II "You're not repeting your mistakes, you're creating entirely new ones".
Although, when you listen to the album from start to finish, you realise that that may not be the case, and the question arises, "was this what Load/Re-Load should of been?". The answer is yes. This is the Metallica we've been waiting for, but I fear it's too late, and the damage has been done to this Metallica fan.
The songs, and the album structure resembles their 4th album ...And Justice For All, but are not as heavy. The music seems LESS produced than even Master of Puppets but the music is at some points boring and unoriginal and sound almost like St. Anger take two.
The Day That Never Comes is an obvious attempt to recreate One, and The Unforgiven III just does not make any sense, but the guitar solo is awesome but the production is low, and Hammett is back to using the Wah-Wah on everything, it sounds saturated in the effect such as that in Bleeding Me.
Cyanide is no better, and goes too long, but is overall a decent song.
Suicide and Redemption, the second last song on the album, and a 9 minute instrumental that has almost the same structure than, you guessed it, To Live is to Die. Despite the similarities, this is quite a cool song and definitely worth the listen. The middle of the song breaks down half time, but this would sound way better with Orion style harmonies, the bass on this album is BADASS and is heavy as fuck, definitely a driving point to the entire album. What makes this song even more awesome is the contrast in sounds the guitars are recorded, the guitar solo is cool but just when it starts to get cool he USES WAH. STOP IT, IT SOUNDS SHIT.
The Judas Kiss has the only riff on the album that stands out to me, and is a pretty decent song.
The final piece My Apocalypse just doesn't work for me, sorry, and it drags the album down.
This is not a bad album, way better than St. Anger, but I dare say by not much, and definitely worth blasting in your car. This is a cool party album, but is about as good from the hype as if the Dark Knight turned out to be a G rated Disney adventure.
6/10
The Butterfly Effect
Final Conversation of Kings
Originating from Brisbane, QLD Australia, these mellow, melodic rock band have placed a new genre in Australian music. Being closely related to Cog, The Butterfly Effect, are possibly one of our more finest acts.
Their third installment, The Final Conversation of Kings is no disappointment, but it is no Imagio (their previous release, 2005). All ten tracks are up on their myspace page ( http://www.myspace.com/thebutterflyeffectau ), so naturally I have no bought the album yet (I am hoping the day after I write this).
This entire album is a melodic bath of chill-the-fuck-out tunes, and would make a great stoner party track (as all their albums).
I am still listening to the album, I will edit this in week when I reach a verdict.
Until then:

As far as Disturbed goes, I don't know. Never really got into them.
As far as Watershed goes, holy shit! I just finished running through this album for the second time and I love it even more than the first. It's classic Opeth...98 different forms of metal slammed into one song. Eight times over. You never know where they're gonna end up, but every turn makes the song even better than it was five seconds ago. I have a feeling this one's gonna be in the rotation for a long time. So far, I give this one album of the year. We shall see...

Opeth - Watershed
Fantastic! I give it 9/10. These guys are the kings of prog metal right now.
Judas Priest - Nostradamus
I just got this 2-disc album, and its HUGE! Fucking heavy shit, man. These guys are still hitting just as hard as they did with Painkiller in '90. I cannot wait to see them headlining the Metal Masters tour.
Testament - The Formation of Damnation
Good, solid thrash from the fathers of thrash itself. Not as heavy or catchy as rivals Exodus, but some fucking classic shit, none the less. Alex Skolnick is back!!
Cavalera Conspiracy - Iflikted
Probably the most anticipated event in metal history, legendary founders of Sepultura, brothers Max and Igor Cavalera, are back together churning out wicked, twisted, bullet-fast metal after not saying 1 word to each other for about a decade.
Scar Symmetry - Holographic Universe
This is some pretty good melodic-death metal. pick it up, its not bad at all. not my favorite melo-death artist, but this is no weak release.
Esoteric - The Maniacal Vale
doom. doooom. doooooom. dooooooooooooom. 2-disc of sloooow, despairing, soul-crushing riffs.
Portishead - 3
Never heard of this legendary trip-hop band from England? I'll put it to you this way, it's a good alternative to porn if you want to get a boner. This album has been a long time coming, and the result is well worth the wait.
Muse - H.A.A.R.P.
This is a live CD from Wembley Stadium in London. This band impressed me so much I went and bought this live album, and like these live songs better than the originals. (btw, the song "Stockholm Syndrome" is jaw-dropping) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNaMPhrypYk)
Meshuggah - obZen
the only word that can describe this band: UNRELENTING. This album, though, gets old quick. i'd say their single, "Bleed" is their strongest song. Still, see them live, and everything changes. The energy they course through your very being couldn't be matched on an electric chair in Texas.
Flight of the Chonchords - self titled
ha. hahaha... HAHAHAHAHA, oooh, shit! i love this band. trust me, if you havn't heard them, you'll like them, no matter who you are. they're like comedy rock, same ballfield as Tenacious D.

DEATH MAGNETIC is released in one month. I am looking forward to this about as much as I was the high school musical sequel. Although I'm skeptical about this album, like a fool I'll run out and buy it.
I'm predicting this album is an old-school attempt to rekindle lost talent ala St. Anger. Time will tell.
Also I'm trying to get my hands on Another Black Day, but its not in stock in Australia.

When I think of In Flames, I think of the scientific FACT that The Jester Race is one of the best metal CD's of ALL TIME, but no one knows what happened between Clayman and Soundtrack, but it wasn't good.
Amen. That was the last effort to use their old logo, too. So much cooler than their new logo, which reminds me of bands like The Used and My Chemical Romance.
No one, in the history of pie, has anyone made a successful comeback from such a hugely departed picture, reverted back to the original drawings almost 20 years on.
Celtic Frost, good sir. From 1984 - '87, they released 3 extremely influential metal albums in all of history. 1988 rolls around and they release Cold Lake, probably THE WORST ALBUM OF ALL TIME. Vanity/Nemesis followed in 1990, not a big improvement. The band was successful only in changing their genre from Thrash/Black/Doom metal to good old Glam Rock/Hair Metal...Then the band broke up.
16 years later, Celtic Frost re-unite and release Monotheist. Best album to date! unfortunately, they broke up again. At least this time they ended on a killer note. Monotheist was Heavy in every sense the word can have.
To answer your Metallica woes... The wrong member died in '86. Shoulda been Lars, not Cliff

I was quite pleased with my Jill Scott purchase earlier this year. :)
