Coolant Tube Problem

I just bought a 1993 Geo Metro 4 door 5 speed. I just put a new clutch kit, flywheel, oil pan gaskets, etc. to get it ready to drive. When removing the coolant hose from the top of the radiator, I accidentally pulled the coolant tube out of the back of the water pump. Coolant proceeded to pour from the tube. The reason it pulled out so easy it seems it because the bolt that holds it to the back of the engine is missing. The Haynes manual I have is absolutely worthless and does not even mention the tube.

What size bolt do I need to replace the one missing from the back of the engine?
Is there and O-ring for the coolant tube? I did not see one when the pipe came out. Where can I purchase this at? Is there any special technique for putting the tube back on?

Wow! I just did this coolant pipe thing Saturday myself! I have a 1999 three cyl. 5 speed so I am not sure of the diffrences .. however!!!!! On my engine the pipe has come out twice dumping coolant. I finally think I know why. Glad you posted this .. here we go! My coolant tube has TWO bolt attachment points. I only knew of the one on the tranny. There is a second (10 MM) bolt under the throttle body. You need tiny hands, lights mirrors and paitence to get that bolt in. I used 1/4 in drive with universal joint. This totally secures the pipe in place! I bought spare "O" rings just in case though. The tranny tab by itself didn't hold the pipe, vibration broke it and the pipe backed out. I repaired that too. The bolt under the throttle body solves everything! There is a reason engineers do what they do! Don't dispair .. Metro's are worth the effort!!! DangerDude (big Metro fan)

THanks! What about the threads? How many threads/ inch & size so I can get the right bolt. Where do you get the O rings?

If memory serves, it is 6 X 1.0mm about half an inch long

Ok thanks! So its a 10 mm 6x1mm bolt. What about the O-ring?

Metalbeast, The "O" ring I just took to AutoZone and bought three of them. I don't know the size, I just took the old one and matched it up to what they had in a box of different sizes. Cost about a dollar thirty five each (or close to that) I'm sure any good auto parts store will have "O" ring selections. Remember to grease the new "O" ring and water pump housing before fitting the pipe back in. That 10 MM bolt is common all over the engine. It's the same size that holds the air cleaner brace to the valve cover. Best example I can think of right now. It's hard to get the bolt it started because it's difficult to reach, lots of pipe wiggling and hand pinching to get everything lined up and not cross thread anything. That hidden bolt also ensures the pipe is IN all the way in the water pump housing and makes a good tight seal! Hope this rambling information helps you more than those Haynes books! They are good for a lot of things but not ALL things. Aren't these forums NEAT! DangerDude

Metalbeast .. took a look at the Muscle car forum! Very nice! I used to have a sweet 1963 Corvair (not a muscle car) (hah) convert. I'm trying to ween myself off cars as a life. The Metro is the car of the times though. I sometimes get pessimistic about the future of cars. Which is veeery tough on a car guy .. what to do??? Turn to beer? smoke a pipe? Rebuild Metro's I guess .. until antigravity belts come along .. suggetions? DangerDude
