a/c problems

Alright i have some a/c problems and it's almost 100 degrees here so i would really like it to work. here is what i know, it has the proper amount of freon in it, i checked like last week. im pretty sure the compresser is running because when i press the a/c button the tacometer goes up (that means the compressor is running, right?) i turn the air on and it blows air but when i press the a/c button, no longer how long i wait the temperature of the air comming out stays the same. could it be a clog somewhere? if it is would i be able to find and fix it myself? if i have to take it into a shop how much would it cost? thanks.

how did you verify the amount of freon?

If you haven't even checked to see if the compressor is engaging, I'm doubting everything else. The RPM rising does not mean the compressor is engaging.

i hooked up a freon refil can up and the gauge said it was at the proper level. i'll check to see if the compressor is running, my dad told me that if the rpm went up it ment it was so i just went by that.

only way I know of verifying the freon amount is to pull it out and measure it.

RPM going up only means the computer is recognising a command for AC, that doesn't mean its doing anything

If there's TOO MUCH refrigerant in the system (we stopped using freon a while ago ;)) then the high pressure switch will keep the compressor from engaging. If the proper amount of refrigerant is in the system and the compressor is indeed turning, your orifice tube/ expansion valve may be blocked or not working.

That's just a start. If you can't track down the problem easily yourself, you'd be best served to bring it to an shop that does HVAC work on cars. Refigerant is expensive and bad for the environment if it leaks out, and the compressor is easily damaged, which is big bucks to get replaced.

By the way a can of refrigerant is not the accurate way to fill/check refrigerant amount, and in your case if the compressor is engaging it is sounding more like you have an electrical problem with the input to the pcm from the a/c switch itself
