VSS code 24 after installing cruise control

I installed the audiovox ccs-100 aftermarket cruise control on my 95 1 liter geo metro. It worked when tested, then I decided to put shrink tubing around the convoluted tubing to keep any water out. What I forgot was that the red wire connected to the brake light switch is always hot: I forgot to disconnect the battery and when i released all the wires from the servos connector I saw a little spark. Now when I turn on the cruise control while driving it works for 20 or 30 seconds then quits and turns on the check engine light. I blinked out the code and it is code 24- Vehicle Speed Sensor. I decided to disconnect the cruise from the (yellow/green wire) VSS wire under the dash, and try it on tach only setting. It did the same thing causing the check engine light to come on again. I know the vehicle speed sensor is in the speedometer but is there really something that could have shorted in the VSS? Is it more likely that I screwed up my ECM? Any thoughts? Thanks Eric

I bought a factory service manual and discovered the the (yellow/green) vss wire is supposed to have 5 volts running through it when key is turned on. Mine did not. Instead it was grounded. It should not be grounded. So i disconnected it from the ECM and it still was grounded. This told me it wasn't in the ECU but in the speedometer. After pulling apart the gauges I discovered the glass reed switch that closes 4 times per revolution of the cable, was cracked. I soldered in a new reed switch and cleared the code from the ECU. It worked great and the check engine light hasn't come on since. Now my problem...I thought this would solve the issue with the cruise control I installed. It did not. Now the cruise will engage for like 5 seconds then stop. The second time you try to switch it on, it does nothing. I am at a loss with this cruise control thing. The tech support was of no help whatsoever. They told me i probably don't have enough vacuum. I think that it has enough vaccum because i am testing it on flat ground. Anybody else have this problem with the ccs-100 audiovox cruise on their geo metro? Thanks for any help.
