Hey there,I just got this 1992 Jetta and added a new altenator, plugs and wires and it was running fine but when the motor was idleing it sounded like a diesel.I drove it for a whole day and other than the diesel sound it worked fine.As I was driving it home the engine shut off and the battery light came on and I couldn't start it again. It wouldn't turn over.It seemed like the altenator was sciezed.Today I went and tried to start it and it started fine but it still sounded like a diesel engine. My buddy is a mechanic and he can't figure it out,he thinks it might be an oil pump if they have one he isn't sure,he just doesn't know what it might be.Could anyone help me out thanks.

Is the engine vibrating badly? If so, check to be sure that the timing marks are correct and check the timing. If it runs smoothly, check your exhaust system and your catalytic converter. If it seems to bog down when you run at high RPM's it's probably the cat. If your exhaust is leaking there is frequently black carbon deposits on the pipes.
Very Important: Take it to a parts store that will check your charging system for free and see if the alternator is putting out the current it should.
