cluster with tach work in non-tach car?

The '91 I'm picking up sunday has no tachometer, which bothers me... I've found some clusters on ebay (I know it must be 90-91) with the tach and the connectors appear the same

what I'm asking is if I get a cluster with a tach, will i be able to plug it in and have it work without additional wiring?

Yes it works. the car has a tach output regardless.

Just make sure its the right year and its plug n' play. Sedans are a great source for clusters with tachs, and can be had for a lot cheaper sometimes.

Should have let me know when I was at the salvage yard...I saw tons of them there. But I do need to go look for another one for the new ED, so Ill keep an eye out for you Frodo.

frodo, what year are you looking for? I have a 88-89 w/ a tach, and the 6.8k redline (I think that's it... stock for a LX)

I'm actually running a HF cluster in my car now, which is funny, b/c all my friends think I'm redlining my car @ 5k.

FrodoGT
06-13-2008, 08:07 PM
90-91. I almost couldnt care where the redline is. As long as itll read up to like 8.

Christ
06-13-2008, 09:32 PM
I'm pretty sure that all tachs from 88-91 read up to 8k or 8.5k

where does a DX redline? we don't have a rev limiter do we?

Tony
06-14-2008, 12:55 PM
7200 rpm is where your rev-limiter kicks in. Common spot on most USDM engines. My b18a1 kicks in right there as well.

dan89
06-14-2008, 01:23 PM
even the d15?

Tony
06-14-2008, 01:53 PM
Yep, that is what I had before the b18. Don't know what the redline actually is, i can go look at my Si tach to tell you that, but I'm lazy, lol.

Even knowing what the redline is for it, the d15 looses power way before the redline anyways.

Christ

orange is 6k, redline is 6500. it loses all power due to valve float and lack of timing at about 5.5k and starts degrading at around 5k

FrodoGT

if I recall its actually 6800..could be wrong but I thought I saw it in the service manual. My y8 redlines at like 7200..so id like to see that far :P

thanks guys  ugh now that i have the money to blow I can't find a manual tach cluster...

Welcome to my world. I was considering going for an integra cluster..but the DA is a bit too wide and the DC2 is a little complicated wiring wise, plus I really hated hacking into my cars engine harness for the swap..but I could put it back easily. Not that I ever will, and it was worth it anyway. But I liked having a totally uncut car.

I'm about to give up and buy an automatic cluster and just block off the gear indicator

Christ
06-15-2008, 12:25 PM
you don't even have to block it off, just take the lenses out carefully, and replace them with black plastic strip.

I think you'll have to use an exacto knife to cut them out of the cluster, but you can just glue in a plastic strip where they used to be.

Other than that, if you're going to use an auto cluster, you could also rewire the gear indicator lights for any other indicator you want, like if you have a MSD box w/ a shift light wire... you could replace them all with thin blue acryl, and wire them all to the MSD box, then you'd have a blue strip for a shift light.... just some things to think about.

hmmm... I'm gonna see how this auction pans out and i just may get it... I could always put a little neon tube on the gear indicator that pulses with my music lol (jk btw)

Sorry Frodo, I haven't had the chance to go out to the salvage yard and see what we have around here....and unfortunately, I work 8-5 m-f...which is the only time they are open too.

Ill have my dad check for me.

dan89

I hate you.
it's an auto cluster with 318k miles though lol... If I find another i'll let ya know

Christ
07-27-2008, 08:48 AM
the mileage on those is fairly easy to reset... take the speedo apart, lift up the arm on the back of the odometer with a pin, jam the pin somewhere, set it to your mileage, and drop the pin... just don't break it, else the ODO won't work at all...

also, if your speedo is the same size (can't remember, but S-10's have diff sizes of the gauges between diff clusters) you can change out your odo and speedo for the one in your new cluster, and then you won't have to roll back the mileage.

dan89
07-27-2008, 09:08 AM
i would swap the speedo's but the one that came out had a slipping needle and was off by ~10mph

Christ
07-27-2008, 09:20 AM
so glue the needle onto the post when you put it back together... god... do I have to think of ALL the redneck ingenuity? lol

Nah, you can probably change just the odo too, but you might have to melt some plastic and use hot glue.. I think it's sonic-welded in place on a couple posts... you could also just drill/screw the posts to put it back in the new cluster...

Of course, this DOES imply that you actually give a damn... you might not.. I didn't when I put the HF cluster in.

(It's funny w/ a 5k redline, everyone thinks I'm going to blow my engine up revving to 6.5k+ on DPFI.)

Tony
07-27-2008, 10:27 AM
Nope Christ. The Odometer is just screwed into the speedometer head. This is what I keep trying to tell people when they swap clusters and are worried about their odometer. Screw using a pin to roll it back, just turn it around, unscrew the speedometer head out, and unscrew the odometer/tripometer out of it. Its a very easy fix.

dan89
07-27-2008, 11:44 AM
it's not worth pulling out the cluster again to me lol

Tony
07-27-2008, 11:50 AM
Lol...6 screws and a handfull of plugs to keep your original mileage :P

dan89
07-27-2008, 08:29 PM
eh... the milage didn't match the motor anyway :D

FrodoGT
07-27-2008, 10:29 PM
I hear that! Im tempted to roll whatever odo I get back to 90k. To match the engine, since ive literally replaced anything on the car that would matter mileage wise.

dan89
07-28-2008, 07:02 AM
hell, i've only got about 25k on the motor... it was rebuilt by the owner before the previous owner

Christ
07-28-2008, 05:12 PM
That's about all I've got... nothing on the car really has a true mileage reading anyway, so when I replaced the cluster for the third time, I just said "screw it" and didn't bother to change it... it's beyond "mechanical limits" anyway for the car, and it's exempt on the title, so no worries... eventually, I might take it out altogether, since I don't really need to know how far I've gone.

And, before anyone says it, I don't need the ODO for scheduled maintenance.. I know about how far I drive to everywhere I go, and even if I didn't, I still change my oil every 2-3 months, and check everything else.

dan89
07-31-2008, 06:12 PM
well guys i took the easy way out and swapped just the odometer head... it just pops out anyway

Tony
07-31-2008, 06:24 PM
See. I told you it was an easy fix :)

dan89
07-31-2008, 06:26 PM
yup :D I'm just glad I finally got a tach

Tony
07-31-2008, 07:20 PM
Bah, I'm going back to no tach in my white hatch for awhile. Gonna move my Si cluster to my other hatch and I will install my 3.5" tach in my white hatch when I get my CRX dash in. Jacking my gauges from my race car, because it won't need them for a long time.

Christ
07-31-2008, 07:44 PM
Haha... I'm still waiting to find the right dash to fix my CRX dash install.

once I do that, I might do the GSR cluster swap... new idea, I'm considering actually getting another DD and using the ZC Turbo project for it, then going w/ a limited build on a B-series.. I didn't have the whole dream yet... so I don't know what B-series, or what to do to it... all I know was that someone asked what was in the car... and I said "light modded B*blahblah*" then I woke up.. didn't catch which B it was tho.

I do know that it was quiet... probably using a stock intake/exhaust, had a decent amount of "city torque" (power to use when driving through the city, good off red lights and normal driving)... but I never really revved it past 4500 in the dream... so I don't even know if it was Vtec or not... I'd assume it was tho.

The guy I bought my tranny conversion off yesterday called me up today and told me he has like 3 clusters laying around and hell sell me one out of an Si for like 5-10 bucks "cause us Honda people gotta look out for each other"...its like he wants to be buddies or something. But hey, hes got Si seats with the red centers and an Si cluster and hes cutting me ridiculous deals..Ill be his friend for a little bit :P

Christ
08-01-2008, 04:15 PM
No doubt... 'till he starts asking for "favors.." like that guy w/ the DC2 down the street... don't cut his brake lines... no matter what

Christ
08-01-2008, 04:18 PM
I see the auto strip there in the cluster.. and I think to myself... how cool would it be if you'd wire up some brake light switches under the shifter console that lit up those numbers with each gear you were in... kinda like a manual gear indicator... lmao

P -1
R -2
N -3
D4 -4
D3 -5
2 -Reverse

I've already got the wiring and mounting in my head too... just might (never) have to do this one day... (again, never.)

Would be kinda sweet tho, and def different... never seen anyone do that.

funny part is i had thought about that lol
