Best lowering springs?

I know many people have opinions on this, and I was wondering for a daily driver that needs a mild drop, which would be the best lowering springs? I'm leaning towards eibach sportlines for my '91 hatch i'm picking up next monday :D

never had any kind of performance springs on my car, but i am opted to get the Tokico shock and spring setup, for a mild 1.25" drop. p.s. sportlines have bit more agressive drop.imo.

a lot of people like the koni shock with ground control coil sleeves.

My RX8 has tein stech with tokico's and i like them too.

where can those setups be found? I'm new to the import scene and have no idea where to find parts. Thanks

the first question is: how much are you willing to spend. answer that and we can give you a multitude of choices

koni/GC, or illuminas gets my vote for most apps. You can get the springs in any rate you like so you can custom fit the setup to your liking before ordering. Mine are 300/200 and I think its just fine if not a tad soft. The stock GC setup is like 350/225 I think. Here use this.

I don't want to blow more than say $250 on springs... oh and frodo i can't get your link to work

nvm my internet just had a hiccup lol. great link!!

Just did some pricing and new twin-tube KYB struts and the matrix ($120) coilover setup would only run me $350... I believe this is the route I'm gonna go... any thoughts?

FrodoGT
06-02-2008, 10:08 PM
wtf is a matrix coil over set? and if your speaking about the kyb gr-2's they are stock replacements..and stiff springs will blow them with short order.

Greenblurr93
06-03-2008, 05:53 AM
yeah, dont get KYB and dont get no name springs... you get what you pay for and you gotta pay to play

dan89
06-03-2008, 08:52 AM
matrix was the coil over set from summit racing... can anyone point me in the direction of somewhat affordable struts for lowered suspension?

Greenblurr93
06-03-2008, 08:54 AM
whats your budget for struts... you gave us the budget on springs only. Koni's are nice, tokico's are nice as well

dan89
06-03-2008, 09:00 AM
well I'd much rather save a few months to get some nice struts rather than hold back my possibilities with a budget :D once I sell my mustang I'll have $300 a month to blow on the civ

i just bought used skunk2 519.05.1650 springs, i figure i need a camber kit and better shocks. What a mess did i just get myself in to. AND the car doesn't even run now anyways.

Greenblurr93
06-03-2008, 09:35 AM
depending on how much you lower it, you dont need a camber kit

readallen
06-03-2008, 11:14 AM
the springs are 2.5 inches in the front and 2 inches in back, but i read that they are closer to 2.75 almost 3 inches in the front. but 2.5" would be plenty. so do i need a kit

Greenblurr93
06-03-2008, 12:00 PM
I have mine dropped about that and i dont use one, i had my toe zeroed out and ran -2.5* camber for the track.

It's funny b/c when i lowered my 1st civic with sleeved coilevers i had no camber issues at all...after that car got totaled i took off the coilover and put them on another civic...exact same car...and had camber issues :dunno;

so it's hard to say if you'll need a camber kit b/c every car is different even if it's the same

FrodoGT

Roughly 2 deg of camber is bearable. So when you go to get an alignment make sure you look at that spec. I lowered my car as far as shed go (had no choice, short springs) and had almost 4 DEG! My car looked broken. and the tires would have worn bad, quickly.

Also those springs you got are stiff as hell! You basically limited your options to illuminas, or konis. Both of which have lifetime warranties and can handle a spring rate that stiff without exploding.

They are progressive though so they wont be rock hard all the time. but when you load them up in a corner those springs become blocks, lol.

Greenblurr93
06-03-2008, 01:06 PM
yeah, ive been on -2.5 for about 6 months now, now real bad tire wear.. just rotate the tire normally and youll be good. (I actually have to take the tires off the rim to rotate then diagonally since they are directional)

where can i find these tokico illuminas?

'thmotorsports' has them, they also have a bunch of other goodies for our cars at pretty cheap prices..

Anyone know the spring rates on the H&R Sports? Just got a set of them for a rear disc conversion, but can't find anything on the spring rates. I'm just looking for something stiffer than stock, don't need lower on my white hatch. The springs are actually for an EG I believe, possibly EK(they were pulled off an EK, but from the looks of the rear struts, they were for an EG, bottom is pinched in)

it looks like frodo has this setup, but how does GC sleeves and tokico illuminas sound? I'd have to wait a while though but I think it'd be worth it.. 1" drop for daily driving and slam it down for the weekends :D

every time you adjust your ride height youll need to get an alignment... that could get pricey real quick... but that setup sounds good. get it, find a happy medium that you like, get an alignment and drive the S outta her.

here a question I have been wondering- what size rims and tires work the best (overall performance) on these cars, and what fits when they are lower? how much do bigger wheels affect the acceleration, clutch wear, and gas mileage (for the different ratio transmissions)?

Greenblurr93
06-04-2008, 11:17 AM
keep the rolling diameter the same and it wont affect anything. meaning go with a larger rim and smaller profile tire to keep the overall circumfrance the same and it being lowered wont have any affect on it, nor will it affect the speedo, odometer, accel etc..

However get lightweight rims and your will increase accel by reducing rotating mass.

sounds like a plan  would the stock struts survive with a 1" drop until I can get the tokicos? sorry for the stupid questions, I know nothing about these cars lol

15's and 16's seem to be the preferred wheel size...but if you're not in a rush to drop your car i'd say wait, do more research, and then get what you really want...like i'm having to deal with these cut springs so i can save up enough to get the Teis SS set-up...but that's all up to you

Im loving the hell out of my tokico/gc setup. With the Da teg rear sway bar and my sticky ass tires, I have a great balance in corners and a slight tail out stance, kind of like a rwd car. The more I put my foot into it, the harder the noise digs into the turn, and when I let off the rear kicks out slightly to allow me to point the nose into the corner.

Right now you cant get a finger in at a 45 deg angle..much less straight.

I cant raise it anymore than that right now. I got my GC's from the junkyard off a mazda mx-3. They are too short, that is maxxed out. Im about 1/2"-3/4" from the bumpstop. But hell, I got em for 50 bucks.

I did break down and order longer springs for the front. I have 2 12" springs of the same 300 spring rate sitting next to me waiting to be put on.

Also, this is what my unmodified camber looked like.

my sedan had a huge camber issue after only being lowered by 2 inches... the rear was almost straight up tho... I think it has alot to do w/ worn bushings, sometimes.

I've pretty much decided that I"m going to go w/ air-struts, since I only plan on dragging the car on weekends... not auto-x.

Plus, I"ll have a secondary theft prevention system... if the chassis is sitting on the tires when it's parked, you aint' driving off with it. :)

Basically, the air valves are only going to be active when the ignition is "on" or hot... meaning that if the key (or switch in my case) is "off", the car is sitting on it's tires, basically, fully lowered.

dan89
06-05-2008, 03:21 AM
nice stance frodo, what size wheel/tire combo is that? these 17s look somewhat huge lol...

and dropzone, that's not a bad idea but you may want to check your local laws... in some areas it's illegal to have a vehicle sitting that low or with adjustable suspension

Greenblurr93
06-05-2008, 05:55 AM
its illegal to drive with it that low. otherwise it can be 'for show use' which isnt illegal.. from the sounds of it he's going to be driving with it not so low, which wouldnt be any different than you or i driving around on adjustable coilovers

so like i was asking before, how long would the stock struts last with GC coil overs and a ~1" drop?

FrodoGT
06-05-2008, 06:20 PM
Depends on the spring rate. The stiffer the spring, the more the shock is "just along for the ride" Theyd last a while, but probably would not be very effective at all.

Christ
06-05-2008, 07:57 PM
Obviously, I can't drive my sedan sitting on it's tires... that wouldn't work.

I plan on driving and having it aligned and suspension preset for about a 2 inch drop...

BTW, around here, (Pennsylvania) they go by bumper height... can't be less than 2" off the ground, or more than 36" or something like that... the lower is correct, the lifting is a problem for me to remember.

dan89
06-06-2008, 07:03 AM
well as soon as i ditch the mustang i'll pick up some gc sleeves and see how long the struts last lol...
