My 99 olds alero shut off at the light when I was driving. It started right back up and drove just fine. No lights came on prior to it shutting off. It just shut down quietly and it has done this once before last year, but i was driving when it shut off then. I needed a fuel filter nad when it was replaced it was fine til now. Battery fine so now what! Anyone know what it could be??? I have an auto start installed; had it for a year no problems. I just got an inspection on it and a wheel alignment. It hasn't done it again and it was 4 days ago. The car does heat up a bit when drving a while, but never no smoke. The gage will go past the mid mark but never into the hot/red zone...im pretty confused about the situation...someone...anyone...

My car has done the same thing numerous times while driving and while stopped at a light. I came across this thread on this very website from years back. I'm going to try this procedure. Check out this link it might be helpful.

Thanks for the info...I clicked on that link but they were talking about passlocks, Are you saying that has something to do with my car shutting off? What did you do or get done to resolve your issue with your alero shutting off...or you didnt resolve it yet?

This could be a crank position sensor. When theres a poor connection, or the sensor is not functioned properly, the engine can just shut off, but will restart soon after, like nothing happened.

Would a tune up fix that or does the crank position sensor need to be replaced seperately? and where is the crank position sensor located? thanks

the crank position sensor is a separate issue than from a tune-up, but it is part of the ignition system. The CPS is located on the engine block near the oil pan, on the back of the engine. If your CPS is weak and is not working properly, your PCM cannot fire the cylinders when required and will not run. Sometimes a bad sensor will cause the car to just shut off and restart without problem, right away.

When asking these type questions be sure to post what engine you have. 2.4L L4 or 3.4L V6?
