Rear end noise

Been hearing this whining sound from the rear of my car for a while now and when ever I put the key in and turn it to the on position there is an whining sound. Then when I start the car it goes away or sometimes the whining sound starts up right away. Other times I have to through it in revearse drive it round the block or so, come back and let it idle and I can hear this continuous whining sound till I turn the car off.

If I can get it recorded I will post it up for you guys tomorrow or something so you can hear what Im hearing.

I was thinking it was the gears but Im not sure. If so I will simply have them redone for now. I do want to buy an whole new rear end though soon. Anyone know where I can buy an 8.5 10 bolt rear end? Brand new or what other modle cars can I geat an rear end from that will bolt right up? I heard Impalas and caprice 91-96 bolt right up but are a wider.







Also I went to check My air filter the other day and notice quite a bit oil in there and all around the pan. There is one big spot of oil on the filter then lil drops everywhere all around. Is this a big concern? This is an 4.3 V6 fuel injected. Im going to change it while I do the oil change but just wondering if it was a big issue.

The gears will only make noise when the vehicle is in motion. What you are describing sounds like a fuel pump whine - they get noisier once the filter starts to become restricted. Try replacing the filter and see what happens. The filter is bolted inline with the fuel line underneath the vehicle, ahead of the fuel tank.

As for the oil in the filter, this could indicate a high mileage engine (excessive blowby) or a plugged PCV valve. Check the valve first, it's cheaper than an engine :) ... Also, if the oil consumption is not excessive, it might be OK to leave it as it is. Still, check that PCV valve.

The Impala SS rear axle is a little wider, due to the backspacing and offset of the 17" alloy wheels those cars come with. The Caprice 9C1 rear (the tri-nine model with the discs) is the correct width and bolts right in. In fact, that is what I am using. Keep in mind that if you do this and your car has a 7.5" diff (it most assuredly does), you will have to obtain a driveshaft 1" shorter. The rear axles (aside from the 7.5"/8.5" driveshaft requirements) are pretty much a bolt-in swap for any 1977-1996 cars.
