Speedometer Not Working

I have a '96 3000GT N/A DOHC, and when I bought it the guy that had it previously said the speedometer was broken and he'd been too lazy to get it fixed. Well, after fixing some other problems I'm finally getting around to trying to fix this particular problem. I don't know that much about this part of the car, so I have almost no idea where to start. I know that it can be a snapped cable or the actual gear in the transmission got messed up. Which is more common, or is there another more common problem that I should look into first. If it is the gear, what's the best way to go about replacing it? Also, are there any good places that you guys can recommend that sell parts like this for 3kGT's? Sorry for all the questions, but this is the first time I've ever had to work on a speedometer so I need a fair amount of help. Thanks!

There isnt a speedo cable. Its a speed sensor and wiring.
Look at the top of the trans directly below the throttle body. You should see the speed sensor and the wiring going to it.
Go from there with diagnosis.

Haha, told you I was a n00b when it came to this! Thanks for the help, I'll check on the sensor and see if I can figure it out. Hate to bug you, but got any recommendations on a good place to get those parts if they're broken?
