Hey guys. Ill try to make this as short as possible.
For reasons having to do with practicality and the cost of gas, I'm thinking about getting a new car, possibly a toyota yaris. In order to do so, I would need to sell my car.
SOOOO, is anyone interested in a 97 SL w/ 106,xxx miles? Awesome condition inside, only minor defects outside. No mechanical problems whatsoever. List of mods is in my tag. PM me if u want and I can send pics or post a vid of the car on youtube. Thanks guys!

Buying a new car to save money on gas is an oxymoron.
It would take 10 years or more to SAVE anything when buying new.
Seriously, these cars get decent mileage as it is. I got 25 mpg my last tank. The tank before 23. This one I am looking at the possibility of 26 mpg.
Getting 35mpg but having a $300/month payment, plus higher insurance wont save you anything. You will be out more.

Toyota Yaris is a cheap ass car. With the money he would get from selling his 3kgt, he would only need to finance a few grand. Stretch that over a few years and your $300/month arguement goes out the window.
If gas prices continue as they are, 10 mpg difference is going to add up quickly.
Insurance will actually be less on that car because it is safer and not considered a sports car. On my dads '03 Taurus, full coverage is only like $900/year for me. With my '92 3kgt, liability is $800/year.
Long story short, this guy will save a lot of money by going this route. Not to mention all the expensive things that could go wrong on his 3kgt, a new car has few of those expenses and pretty much only needs routine maintenance.
mistermoonpie, it may be helpful for you if you list where you are located so interested buyers know how far they would need to travel to pick the car up. Also you might want to throw up a number you are looking for so people have an idea what kind of offers to toss around. You might also want to list some basic things about the car...like the color, etc.

my wife just bought a brand new Lancer ES. she pays 3 TIMES as much as i pay for the vr4 and we are the same age and same coverage on the cars. hers is a 4-cylender 4-door with 5-star crash test rating. contrary to what alot of people think, insurance depends on how much the car is worth (i.e., how much they pay if you wreck it).
on another note...i can understand wanting a more practical vehicle...but why in the world would you want a Yaris??? god damn those are some ugly cars. I've been able to pull down ~45 mpg highway in my wife's lancer...and that at least looks decent.

Just looked it up.
A Yaris is only rated for 29/36mpg. So its not even a 10mpg difference.
With taxes, fees etc, and even using the money from the 3000GT sale he will still be looking at over $200 a month payments.
Insurance will be more because its a NEW car. I'm 27 and my full coverage is $75 a month. On a new car, even something like a Yaris would be MINIMUM $90 a month. Thats an additional $180 a year, on top of the MINIMUM $2400 a year car payments for 5 years.
Lets say the GT gets 22mpg (a lot of people pull down 25mpg daily driving) and the Yaris gets 29mpg and you drive 10k miles a year. 10,000 divided by 29 mpg is about 345 gallons. 10,000 divided by 22mpg is 455 gallons. At current gas prices od 3.95 a gallon that would be a savings of $435 a year on fuel.
Spending $12k (bare bones base mode before taxes, fees, etc) on a Yaris is going to take many, many years to pay for the gas savings.
A new car is NOT an investment. You always lose your ass. Buying a new car to save money on gas is not smart. Go buy a $1000 Geo Metro if you want to save money on gas. Don't go buy a $12k (before taxes, fees, etc) car because it gets 7 (or less) more miles to the gallon.
I've got alot of conservative estimates. Insurance would most likely be more than the $90 a month, and the 3000Gt is going to average more than 22mpg.

See, the thing is, though, that my parents are willing to put at LEAST a 5000 down payment on the car for me. That way, I can get the S edition (with a neat little body kit on it) with pretty much every option for only $125/month. That, plus having a new car with 0 miles on it as apposed to a 10 year old car with 100k+ is the real selling point for me. Not that my car has caused me any trouble, but I'd rather not wait until it does. I'm gonna need a new car soon, and I figure I might as well get it now while my parents are still willing to put a 5k down payment on one.
Anywho, I live near Houston, TX and I'm looking to get as much as I can (naturally). I'd like to get around 6500 for it. That's about 1800 under kbb and 2000 less than the average for these cars in this area.

good example of how retarded this argument is...toyota prius has a 9 gallon tank. at 45mpg that equals out to 415miles per tank. a tt can get 22mpg(easily) with a 20 gallon tank. equal 440...bit more per tank. only difference is that premium costs more than regular. but add in the monthly payments(plus interest) the cheap ass prius makes a new car kinda seem like a worse idea.
or b/c i can say it. sell the sl get a 944 have fun and still get 33mpg(i can get 35). no u dont have the same power but u can make it powerful and still get 30+ mpg. plus u'll still have some money left over between the selling of the sl and purchase of the 944 to enjoy urself on something. a vacation or upgrades to te car, or put it in a high yeild savings account or something. i paid 3g for mine and other than what was already wrong i havent done anything but a tune up. about to do brakes only b/c i'm going to turbo claipers and brembo rotors and ceramic pads

That would pretty much contradict everything I'm going for with this idea lol. If I got a 944, it would be close to 10 years OLDER than the car I have right now, with at least as many miles. I want something with 4 doors, fresh paint, 0 owners, 0 miles, and from a fairly reliable company. Kinda the total opposite of what I've been going for, but at this point in my life and in my situation, I think it would be most beneficial for me to buy a new yaris.
I know I can get good mileage in my car, but I don't. As long as I have my 3k, I'm not going to be able to stop racing everything that moves. Honestly, with the way I drive, I will probably double my current mpg if I get a yaris.
Money wise, I figure it will be a good investment. Because my parents are going to help out with 5k down payment, i will be left paying for only around 9k of the car. NOW, if I were to buy another used car (say the 944) with 90-100k+ miles on it, it wouldnt be SAFE to assume that I can put any more than 30k miles on it before stuff starts to go wrong. Then I'd have to buy another used car, put another 30k on it, then need a new one. Basically, unless I can find 5 nice used cars for under 2000 each, i will get more bang (miles) for my buck with a new toyota which I can expect to take me at least 180k miles without crappin out on me.
Plus, who doesn't like that new car smell?

unless its leather...i dont actually like the new car smell.
as for the 944 yes true its not new, but i will say, it's motor is very reliable. like i said i've only had to do a tune up on it motorwise.
chevy aveo(thats got a toyota designed motor) and it's cheaper than the yaris...i think. as for racing, no dont think u can race much with the yaris, maybe a base scion. they only have like 110hp

A new car is NEVER a good investment. You always lose out.
As for racing, its called growing up and gaining responsibility. Keep your foot out of the throttle.
Even if your payments are "only" $125 a month thats still money being spent. You wont be saving anything.
I put 50k miles on my car before anything major happened. It had 104k on it when I bought it. If you cant go 30k miles without something major going wrong you need to learn how to drive and maintain a vehicle.

without even looking at who wrote this, i knew who it was just based on the wording.
neways as he gets older he'll relize racing cars on the street isnt everything. i've stopped doing it, but my roommate is only 19 and is still in that phase.
you have 110k on a 3000gt, everyone here can tell you, the 3k motor is a very good long lasting motor, provided you take car of it like u would a honda or toyota motor. plus trust me, u'll go from 222hp down to like 110hp, u'll miss the power. i went from 320 to 180...it sux. i love it, but it sux.
plus think u'll spend 125 for the car, plus gas. the 3k is paid for, u just pay for the gas at this point. and plus if u beat on a yaris 5spd and something goes wrong, the warrenty wont cover it, and it'll b coming out of your pocket, just the same as the 3k would.
good example, a few months ago my trans dropped in my 944, only weeks after thte new clutch. now my connecting rod doesnt hold it place for long so i have to tighten it every week. i've gone to dealers and looked at the the 350z and the rx8. i didnt care about gas milage of either of them, i didnt care that they were only 2seater(more or less) i wanted a car with a warrenty. i look at my 944 and relize, nothing bad is going to happen now with all the new parts. moral of the story, invest some money in the 3k, and u'll have nothing to fear.
