1999 525i wagon rear latch problem

When I push the rear gate open button on the gate it makes a sound like the motor is trying to open it, but it will not open. I think it is the motor that it is probably shot what do yo think?

check power and ground at the connector while activating the lock. if wiring is good, possible you need a new latch assembley. Ive seen many of the locks go bad.
