sub polarity question

I have a 12 alpine type r in a ported box. Today I flipped it over, meaning the cone is facing the inside of the box and the basket is outside the box (because I tought it looked cool). Well the bass hits alot lower like that. My question is, Would my problem be fixed if I connect it backwards too?....or would that just burn the crap out of my stuff?

Inverting the sub also makes the enclosure a bit larger since you remove the displacement of the basket, magnet etc. As far as switching polarity, ive never damaged a sub doing that. In fact i have run a few systems with dual woofers with one sub running normal and the other reverse, something to do with the phase. Ive never gotten into it as i havent really had resons to, im sure paul knows more about it than i do. You can try it its a 1 in a million chance of damaging it. Was the enclosure made for the sub or is a prefab.

ported boxes are more sensitive to volume, and inverting the sub increases the volume a little (as stated above). The phase means nothing as far as volume goes, especially if you only have one sub. Sometimes it actually sounds better, blends better with the midbass or midrange when the sub is connected backwards.
