1997 GTP wont rev past 3500

I have a 97 GTP that starts and if i dont give it gas it dies and if i do give it gas it sounds like it hits the rev limiter at 3500. Ive checked the fuel filter and its good I put a pressure gauge on the rail and it loses pressure. Ive also done the bypass on the fuel pump relay and the car idled good but still popped out at 3500. does anyone have any idea????????????? I think its the fuel pump but dont wanna spend that much money if its not. can some one please help??????

Pull the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator. Then turn the key to ON but not start. Get any fuel spraying out?

Could it be a cat converter that is partially clog.

no i dont think so cuz i put a pressure gauge on the rail and the fuel pressure does drop

Yes there is a limiter, but it would be higher than 3.5 K, more like 8.5 k. I belive that if you do not use overdrive, and using 3rd gear the RPM's would be higher.

If the pressure is dropping at the rail, that sounds like the fuel pump. When is the last time that the fuel filter has been replaced.

well thats just it i checked the filter and ive also checked the relays and the fuses. I did the resistor bypass to put the pump in high speed mode and it idled but it still would not rev past 3500

If the tranny is in park the rev limiter kicks in at 3500.

I'm assuming the reason its idling with the resistor bypassed is because of the higher fuel pressure.

You need to find the leak, which can be complicated without a full fuel pressure tester set.

Would hate to tell you its the pump for sure and you throw a 300 bucks at a pump and its not your problem.

You did look for external leaks around the fuel filter, right? (didnt you say you just changed it?)

After that there are only two places fuel can go, into the combustion chamber due to a Leaky injector, or back into the tank due to a failing pump.

Ohm out all the injectors and see if there are any ones that dont match the rest. This might point to a leaking injector.

Pump replacement or fuel pressure regulator replacement is up to you, would be the next step...

ok i pulled the vaccum line off the regulator and turn the car on several times then when i hooked the vaccum line back up the car ran perfect for two days nows its acting up again. pressure regulator?
