i am not familiar with the 80s cherokees. However since i have an 89' wrangler, i believe, if the wires are on the passenger side of the axle, they are for your 4x4 vacuum pump. when you engage 4 wheel drive, it uses a vacuum to lock the outer shaft to the inner shaft. they changed this over in the 90s i believe because my 94 doesnt have it. you should have like 4 wires connect to a harness. check around there and see if you have an identical harness to plug it into.

FfOLLOW THE LINE, does it go to the top of the round portion of your front diff? If so this is your vent tube for the differential, just tie it to something higher than the diff and you'll be fine.

Usually it is tie wrapped on the firewall to a metal line.
