ZX2 timing belt wants to walk off cam sprocket

Replaced belt, dual overhead cams, cranked over to check belt, wants to walk off. what is causing this problem? new belt installed, what is the adjustment?

There is no adjustment on the pullies or cams to keep the belt from coming loose. Make sure both guide plates on the crank gear are there. Inner and outer. Check the pullys alignment with a carpenters square or something similar that can be put against the pulleys. Another thing would be the tensioner pulley being too loose. Check it by deflection. It should move about a quarter of an inch which pressed in the center with your finger.

I replaced the pullies on mine and ended up putting the new belt on too tight. It didn't walk off right away but did after about 10 miles up the road.

I used to take the belt in my fingers and turn it side ways If you can just turn it 90 degrees it is correct. This is in the long section. A belt that is to tight will sing make noise. Chilton had a picture and instructions on this procedure.

i had this same problem on my 98 zx2 , replaced the t belt and all the pullys , i bought it as a kit and one of the pullys were wrong . same size and every thing but one had the bolt on the out side of the pully and the other had it sunk in a bit, but yeah not even 10 miles and the belt came flying off

but what im getting at is if you replace the pullys too, check them aginst the old ones you pulled off your car.
